Earl of Arundel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Earldom of Arundel, in the peerage of England, is the oldest extant Earldom and perhaps the oldest extant title.
Roger of Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury was one of William the Conqueror's top generals, and William bestowed on him, amongst several hundred other manors, the property at Arundel, with the charge to fortify it with a castle.
On the death of the 19th Earl in 1580, the title fell to Philip Howard, eldest son of the attainted Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk by his wife, the only daughter of the last Fitzalan Earl.

By 1618 he had moved to London where his initial patron was the leading art collector Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel.
Mijtens painted the Earl and his Countess, and was soon commissioned to paint King James I and his son the Charles, Prince of Wales.
Mijtens introduced a new naturalism into the English court portrait, but after the arrival in England of the far more distinguished Anthony Van Dyck in 1632 he was superseded as the leading court portraitist, and around 1635 he appears to have returned to the Netherlands permanently.

In a kind of opposite ceremony to the famous bull running of Pamplona, Spain, the hapless creature was turned out of the alderman’s house, whereupon the villagers ran after him with their bull-clubs.
A butcher of the town, who owned one of the bulls, accidentally set one of his mastiffs upon his own bull which forced it into the town and all the dogs ran after it.
This caused such a commotion in the town that the earl gave the butchers in perpetuity the meadows in which the bulls were found fighting, as long as the butchers each year on this day put a mad bull into the town to be chased.
