Thomas Howard, 4th duke (1536-1572), son of Henry Howard, earl of Surrey, was born on the 10th of March 1536.
Norfolk's first wife, Mary (1540-1557), daughter and heiress of Henry Fitzalan, 12th earl of Arundel, bore him a son, Philip, who in consequence of his father's attainder was not allowed to succeed to the dukedom of Norfolk, but became 13th earl of Arundel in succession to his maternal grandfather in 1580.

The title and estates of Norfolk therefore reverted to the crown on the 5th Earl's death and were granted by Edward II to his half-brother Thomas of Brotherton in 1312 together with the hereditary office of Marshal of England three years later.
Thomas subsequently died in the August of 1338, leaving no sons, and his surviving daughter Margaret was recognised as the Countess of Norfolk in her own right.
Thomas Howard and his son and grandson were therefore the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Earls of Norfolk in the Howard line but were known at the time as Earls of Arundel as the earldom of Arundel was senior to those of both Norfolk and Surrey.

THOMAS OF WOODSTOCK, DUKE OF GLOUCESTER, seventh and youngest son of the English king Edward III, was born at Woodstock on the 7th of January 1355.
Having married Eleanor (d.1399), daughter and co-heiress of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, Essex and Northampton (d.1373), Thomas obtained the office of Constable of England, a position previously held by the Bohuns, and was made Earl of Buckingham by his nephew, Richard II, at the coronation in July 1377.
By refusing an invitation to dinner the duke frustrated the first attempt, but on the 11th of July 1397 he was arrested by the king himself at his residence, Pleshey castle in Essex.
