 Clan MACAULAY
Many formerly held that the MacAulays derived their origin from the ancient earls of Lennox, and that their ancestor was Maurice, brother of Earl Maldouin and son of Aulay, whose name appears in the Ragmans Roll as having sworn fealty to Edward I in 1296.
If, as seems likely, they were really cadets of the Lennox family, they could claim kinship with James VI.
Another clan proved by undeniable documentary evidence to be descended from the Lennox family was that of MacAulay’s neighbours, the MacFarlanes, who in similar fashion were coerced into an alliance by the MacGregors, and similarly escaped punishment after Glenfruin.

 The Barony of Mordington
The Barony of Mordingtoun was possibly granted to Thomas Randolph in 1318 after he and Sir James Douglas ('the good Sir James') had captured nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed as a result of treachery on the part of one of the burgesses.
The Regality of Dalkeith, including the Barony of Mordingtoun, was incorporated of new into the Dukedom of Lennox by a charter under the Great Seal of James VI in favour of Esmé Stewart, 8th Earl and 1st Duke of Lennox on 13th December 1581 (RMS, V, 294).
Note that the title of Earl of Morton continued de jure in the Maxwell family until Robert, 10th Lord Maxwell was created Earl of Nithsdale on 29th August 1620 with precedence from 1581 (SP, VI, 389; SP, VI, 482-3).

THOMAS RANDOLPH (1523-1590) - LoveToKnow Article on THOMAS RANDOLPH (1523-1590)
Randolph, acting on Elizabeth's instructions, intrigued with Angus and the Douglases in favor of a plot to seize the person of the young King James, and to save Morton by laying violent hands on the earl of Lennox.
Randolph married, in 1571, Anne, daughter of Thomas Walsingham.
Randolph, who had hitherto remained ostensibly on terms of 'riendship with Mary Queen of Scots, exerted his influence on nstructions from Elizabeth to prevent Mary's marriage with Darnley; but in 1566 he was driven from Scotland on the charge of having fomented Murray's rebellion, and he then obtained government employment of secondary importance in England.
