Thomas Mayo Brewer (November 21, 1814 - January 24, 1880) was an American naturalist.
Mayo is best known as the joint author, with Baird and Ridgway, of A History of North American Birds (3 volumes, 1874), which was the first attempt since John James Audubon thirty years previously to complete the study of American ornithology.
Brewer spent his spare time contributing to a number of ornithological publications, including John James Audubon's Ornithological Biography.

BREWER, Thomas Mayo, naturalist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, 21 November, 1814; died there, 24 January, 1880.
This work, in three volumes, was the first attempt made on a large scale, for nearly thirty years subsequent to Audubon's great work, to complete the study of American ornithology.
Abundant material existed in government reports and in the archives of the Smithsonian institution, and this was edited with great skill and judgment, the accounts of the habits of the different species being from the pen of Dr. Brewer, while his associates furnished the technical descriptions.

The Brewer’s Sparrow is restricted to the shrub-steppe zone of Washington, where it prefers higher elevations (usually above 2600 feet) with higher precipitation levels, and therefore more grass cover than the drier bottomlands.

Elisha Kent Kane was born in Philadelphia on February 3, 1820, the son of the jurist and Democratic politician John Kintzing Kane and his wife Jane Duval Leiper.
Kane and his steward, William Morton, left for St. Thomas on November 17, but on the voyage between St. Thomas and Cuba, Kane suffered a stroke.

There are also a few striking cases, such as Bonaparte's Gull, Brewer's Blackbird, Cassin's Auklet, MacGillivray's Warbler, Maximilian's Jay, Rivoli's Hummingbird, Scott's Oriole, Williamson's Woodpecker, and Wilson's Phalarope, in which the personal name is still preserved in the vernacular designation although the scientific equivalent has lapsed into synonymy.
His memory is preserved in Brewer's Sparrow ($pizella breweri) and the well known Brewer's Blackbird, which was named Quiscalus breweri in his honor by Audubon in 1843.
Among his best known books are Baird, Brewer and Ridg- way's "Land Birds" in three volumes and "Water Birds" in two volumes; Ridgway's "Manual of North American Birds," "Nomenclature of Colors," and "Birds of North and Middle America" in eight volumes.
