Thomas Meik (20 January 1812 - 22 April 1896) was a British engineer, born in Duddingston, Midlothian.
After attending the University of Edinburgh, Thomas Meik was apprenticed to John Steedman, an engineer and contractor who was working in Glasgow on the Hutcheson Bridge (designed by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of author Robert Louis Stevenson).
In 1859, the commission took over the construction of the Hendon Dock on the south side of the Wear, and Meik was responsible for the entire works (the task included a grain warehouse and a lighthouse - which, although relocated when the South Pier was shortened in 1983, still stands today).

The town was a recognised port from the 16th century; a harbour was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1707.
The harbour, constructed progressively during the 18th century, was extended and complemented by a dry dock in 1881 (works designed by civil engineers Thomas Meik and Patrick Meik).
The commercial port (heavily used for the transport of coal and pit props) eventually closed in 1959, badly affected by silting and the gradual downturn of the Scottish coal-mining industry.

 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Lochaber
The scheme was initially designed by engineer Charles Meik but after his death in 1923, the scheme’s realisation was left to William Halcrow, by then a partner in the firm originally founded by Meik’s father Thomas Meik.
Sir William Halcrow (July 1883 - 1958) was one of the most notable English civil engineers of the 20th century, particularly renowned for his expertise in the design of tunnels and for a host of wartime projects during the Second World War.
The project was finally sanctioned by Parliament in 1921, but construction did not start until 1924; the aluminium smelter was established in 1929 and took about 95% of the 82,000kW of power generated.

The Meik brothers' engineering practice was later renamed CS Meik and Halcrow and today remains one of the world's foremost engineering consultancies, the Halcrow Group.
