The 2nd earl of Salisbury, who sided with the parliament during the Civil War and represented his party in negotiations with the king at Tjxbridge and at Newport, was succeeded by his grandson James (1648I683) as 3rd earl.
Salisbury was the most skilful soldier on the English side after the death of Henry V. Though employed on diplomatic missions both by Henry V. and Bedford, he took no part in politics save for a momentary support of Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, during his visit to England in 1427-1428.
Salisbury is served by the Central New England, and the New York, New Haven and Hartford railways.

Thomas did get back some of his father's lost lands, and helped his financial position further by marrying Eleanor Holland, a sister and eventual co-heiress of Edmund Holland, 4th Earl of Kent, and daughter of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent.
Montacute then joined Henry V in France, where he fought at the siege of Harfleur and at the Battle of Agincourt.

Thomas did get back some of his lost lands and helped his financial position by marrying Eleanor Holland a sister and co-heiress of Edmund Holland 4th Earl of and daughter of Thomas Holland 2nd Earl of Kent.
In July 1415 he was one of seven peers who tried Richard Earl of Cambridge on charges of conspiring against the Montacute then joined Henry V in France where he fought at siege of Harfleur and at the Battle of Agincourt.

The Earl bore the brunt of the battle and the victory of the English is attributed, by a warm admirer, to his ability and valour.
Thomas took Puiset by storm and hanged the garrison, battered Janville with his artillery and, though it was bravely defended, compelled it to capitulate on 29th August; by which date he had gained thirty-eight places "of one sort or another".
Salisbury began the Siege of Orleans on the 12th and, on the 23rd, in spite of a repulse on the 21st, compelled the French to evacuate a position which defended Tourelles, the fortification at the southern end of the bridge.

The Earl of Westmorland left Richard no land, since he was already well provided for by his marriage which had taken place earlier in that year, to Alice, the only child of Thomas Montacute, the 4th Earl of Salisbury, who was then eighteen years of age.
Salisbury died before the walls of Orleans on 3rd November 1428 and his daughter, at once, entered into possession of his lands, which lay chiefly around Christchurch Castle on the western skirts of the New Forest in Hampshire and Wiltshire, although their main residence was Bisham Manor in Berkshire.
Salisbury's abilities were not of a high order, but he possessed great territorial and family influence as the head of the younger branch of the Neville house.
