Born in 1652, the 2nd son of the Hon Edward Russell (a younger brother of the 5th Earl and 1st Duke of Bedford), Edward Russell was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, and, at the age of 19, entered the Navy, where he served under Prince Rupert of the Rhine.
Thomas Osborne was descended from an obscure Kent family.
Osborne was created Viscount Oseburne (ie Osborne) ofDunblane in 1673, Baron Osborne of Kiveton and Viscount Latimer of Danby later the same year, and Earl of Danby in 1674.

Under the patronage of the 2d duke of Buckingham, he was appointed treasurer of the navy (1668), a privy councilor (1672), and lord treasurer (1673—78).

He was trained by Thomas Wijck and moved to England in 1674 as a painter of still-lifes and small landscapes with figures.
