CHARLES STEWART PARNELL - LoveToKnow Article on CHARLES STEWART PARNELL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Sir John Parnell, chancellor of the exchequer in Grattans parliament, and one of OConnells lieutenants in the parliament of the United Kingdom, was the grandson of Parnell the judge.
Parnells opportunity came with the general election of 1880, which displaced the Conservative government of Lord Beaconsfield and restored Mr Gladstone to power with a majority strong enough at the outset to overpower the Opposition, even should the latter be reinforced by the whole of Parnells contingent.
Parnell regarded the measure as a declaration of war, and met it in that spirit.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Parnell, Thomas
Thomas Parnell was born in Dublin in 1679.
Parnell's poem “The Hermit”, a long moral narrative in heroic couplets in which an angel in disguise performs a series of apparently amoral actions by way of demonstrating the mysteries of God's providence to a hermit, was held in particularly high regard.
Parnell's works were included in standard canonical series throughout the nineteenth century, but the slightness of his known oeuvre was not sufficient to save him from the eclipse which befell Augustan poetry in the Victorian period.
