Thomas Playford IV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Playford was born on July 5, 1896 on the family farm in the hills overlooking Adelaide.
Playford could point at the economic growth of the state as a reason for his continued election as Premier but he could also thank a gerrymander of his devising, known locally as a `Playmander', for his hold on power.
Playford was honoured for his service to South Australia with a knighthood in 1957 and his legacy lives on in South Australia with a local council area named for him.

Born in Bethnal Green, London in 1837, Playford moved to Adelaide in 1844 with his family and initially worked as a farmer prior to entering politics in 1868 as the member for Onkaparinga in the South Australian colonial parliament.
During this second term as Premier, Playford also held the position of Treasurer, and managed kudos for significantly reducing the colony's debt, although, it must be admitted, he did spend much of the life of his second term as Premier in India.
Following his defeat, Playford moved to London in 1894 to act as Agent-General for South Australia before returning to South Australia in 1898 to serve in Charles Kingston's government, until he crossed the floor in 1899 over a potential erosion of the power of the Legislative Council, bringing down the Kingston government in the process.

Playford's report of this "late invention" appeared one year before the first occurrence of the term violoncello, in Arresti's publication of 1665.
Even though there is a wide range in the body size of instruments surviving from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, there appears to be a gap of some 20 centimeters between the largest so-called violoncello and the smallest so-called contrabasso.
It is significant that John Playford in 1664 identified the same problems when he said that wirewound strings "sound much better and lowder than the common Gut strings" (see p.

This is due in part to the fact that there are organizations outside the SCA which have done considerable research into these dances.
It should be remembered, however, that many of the dances which are commonly done by such groups come from later editions than Playford's original publication, or from other sources stretching all the way to the late eighteenth century.
In any case, the dances which are described by Playford in his 1651 edition are relatively easy, and are mostly combinations of a fairly small vocabulary of steps, so they are fairly easy to reconstruct.

Following the sudden death of O\'Halloran in 1960, Walsh was narrowly elected to the Labor leadership ahead of Don Dunstan and followed O’Halloran’s lead of preferring co-operation with the LCL to criticising them and maintained friendly relations with Playford, who treated him in a somewhat avuncular manner.
Walsh\'s awkwardness with the media was further highlighted after 1966, the year Playford retired as Opposition Leader and the 37-year-old Steele Hall took his place.
