Paul's Cathedral from 1594, when a "Thomas Raniscroft" was listed on the choir rolls; likely he remained there until around 1600, under the directorship of Thomas Giles.
Ravenscroft's principal contributions are his collections of folk music, including catches, rounds, street cries, vendor songs, "freeman's songs" and other anonymous music, in three collections: Pammelia (1609), Deuteromelia (1609) and Melismata (1611).

Ravenscroft also composed part songs for home music making as well as jolly rounds and "catches" for 3 or more voices to be sung in a tavern or the like.
Ravenscroft was not just a composer, but also a collector of popular songs of his day, which he arranged and published.
Thomas Ravenscroft published many part songs just for such occasions, and the English madrigal tradition surely owes a great debt to him and his contemporaries.

Thomas Ravenscroft, music theorist, composer, collector, editor, and one-time chorister of st. Paul's Cathedral, is the single most important figure in the preservation of the meager repertoire of children's dramatic songs that have survived to the present day.
Ravenscroft no doubt assigned great importance to his fourth collection, for the prefatory material is lofty in tone and extensive in its verbiage.
Ravenscroft's purpose in concluding A Briefe Discourse with a miniature musical stage work was probably not to provide a work intended for staged dramatic purposes, but rather, it was a vehicle to carry diverse selections by various composers, and yet provide some continuity to the music.

Ravenscroft taught music at Christ's Hospital in 1618-22, and in 1621 published a collection of psalms composed by himself and others entitled The whole Booke of Psalmes with the Hymnes Evangelicall and Songs Spirituall.
Ravenscroft was also responsible for the preservation of the largest collection of popular vocal music in his three printed catch books: Pammelia(1609), Deuteromalia(1609), and Melismata(1611).
The works were clearly intended for a popular audience; it is not clear whether they appealed to the same people as took an interest in the madrigal, or whether the publishers were trying to reach a new audience.
