In 1916, the 22-year-old Rockwell painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post, the magazine considered by Rockwell to be the "greatest show window in America." Over the next 47 years, another 321 Rockwell covers would appear on the cover of the Post.
In 1973, Rockwell established a trust to preserve his artistic legacy by placing his works in the custodianship of the Old Corner House Stockbridge Historical Society, later to become the Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge.
In 1977, Rockwell received the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for his "vivid and affectionate portraits of our country." He died at his home in Stockbridge on November 8, 1978, at the age of 84.

 sciforums.com - Norman Rockwell/Thomas Kinkaid
Besides the psychotic emphasis on wholesome family scenes (makes you wonder what he's overcompensating to cover) Rockwell is quite fond of scenes in which a young woman trips and reveals her panties to a leering milkman or bus driver or whatever.
Yes, as people have acknowledged, Rockwell was a talented sketch artist, it's not his style that I think is offensive, but his composition.
Rockwell painting these perfect scenes from Americana is a perfect analogy of those times in that it didn't matter what happened once the bedroom door was closed, as long as the Smiths saw how pretty and well adjusted we were at the soda shoppe.

Celebrated children’s book au-thor Thomas “Tom” Rockwell confesses that he grew up in a small New England town not so different from the rustic communities depicted in the Saturday Evening Post illustrations of his father, Norman Rock-well.
Jim Edgarton later became a model for Norman Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” series of illustrations and the town still touts itself as “the home of America’s most-beloved illustrator,” but Tom Rockwell has done his best to steer clear of his father’s celebrity.
Tom Rockwell knew from an early age that he wanted to be a writer.

The '30s and '40s are generally considered to be the most fruitful decades of Rockwell's career.
The family moved to Arlington, Vermont in 1939, and Rockwell's work began, more consistently, to reflect small-town American life.

I'd have to agree with Sarge that Rockwell, as hokey and whatever he may be, was a very talented illustrator.
I think that it's more than simply kitsch taking itself too seriously and considering itself real art that is so offensive about Rockwell.
