Gates graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928, then joined the investment banking firm of Drexel and Company in Philadelphia and became a partner in 1940.
Gates suggested later that the Russian leader used the U-2 crisis to abort a meeting that he had determined in advance would not result in gains for the Soviet Union.
Stoutly defending his action, Gates later explained that he decided, with the concurrence of Eisenhower and Secretary of State Christian A. Herter, to call the alert when he became aware of the belligerent position Khrushchev intended to take when the summit convened the next day.

USS Thomas S. Gates is an Aegis guided-missile cruiser, one of three assigned to Destroyer Squadron 6, homeported at Pascagoula.
Gates provided while leading the Department of Defense during a period that heralded technological changes from guns to missiles, conventional power to nuclear, piston to jet aircraft engines, and the beginning of space exploration.
Gates resumed civil life as a partner in Drexel and Co. in the fall of 1945, and shortly thereafter was elected a director of several corporations in the Philadelphia area.

Thomas Gates was secretary of defense under President Eisenhower from December 2, 1959, to January 20, 1961.
Gates joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1935 and was called up in April 1942 and sent to Quonset Point Air Intelligence School before being assigned to staff of CINCLANT, the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Theater.
Gates retired from the position in 1977 and died in 1983.

Gates, who had been a lieutenant in the expedition (1585-86) under Sir Francis Drake that removed Sir Walter Raleigh's first colony from Roanoke Island, was the first named of the grantees in the original charter (1606) of the London Company, which founded Virginia.
As he was departing for England in June, however, he was met by the governor, Lord De la Warr, heading a new relief.
That autumn Gates returned to England, and in Sept., 1611, he reappeared at Jamestown with a new expedition containing 300 persons (including his wife and daughters) and many cattle and swine.

Gates (CG 51) assisted its embarked Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 101 March 21 in the capture of Jose Miguel Battle, the suspected leader of an organized crime outfit, while he was aboard a cruise ship in the central Caribbean.
Shortly after midnight, TSG was directed to rendezvous with the cruise ship Celebrity Summit to serve the arrest warrant.
Throughout the operation, Gates was under the tactical control of the Miami-based 7th Coast Guard District and supporting Coast Guard personnel in the execution of their law enforcement authorities.
