The county of Lubbock was founded in 1876, named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Confederate colonel and founder of the Texas Rangers, but the town of Lubbock was not founded until 1890, when it was formed from a unique merger arrangement between two smaller towns, "Old Lubbock" and Monterey.
Lubbock's area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world and is heavily dependent on irrigation water drawn from the Ogallala Aquifer.

Thomas (some sources say Thompson) Saltus Lubbock, soldier, the son of Henry T. and Susan Ann (Saltus) Lubbock, was born on November 29, 1817, in Charleston, South Carolina.
After the death of Colonel Terry at the battle of Woodsonville, Kentucky, on December 17, 1861, Lubbock, then sick in a Bowling Green hospital, was advanced to command of the regiment, but he died in January 1862.

Account of Francis Richard Lubbock who was born in the town of Beaufort, on the coast of South Carolina, October 16, 1815.
He came permanently to Texas in 1836 engaging in mercantile, cattle, and other pursuits until he was appointed assistant clerk of the House of Representatives, which position he held for some time.
