THOMAS STOTHARD (1755-1834), English subject painter, was born in London on the 17th of August 1755, the son of a well-to-do innkeeper in Long Acre.
Being a delicate child, he was sent at the age of five to a relative in Yorkshire, and attended school at Acomb, and afterwards at Tadcaster and at Ilford in Essex.
The commission for this picture was given to Stothard by R. Cromek, and was the cause of a quarrel with his friend William Blake.

Thomas Stothard. The Pilgrimage to Canterbury.
William Blake was incensed by Stothard's project to paint Chaucer's Pilgrims in this manner, for he claimed that the basic design and concept had been stolen from him by Cromek on a visit to his studio in 1805.
Stothard was the first modern painter to explore he pictorial potential of Chaucer's vivid descriptions of the pilgrims and the procession in his Canterbury Tales.
Stothard based the idea of his composition upon the famous frieze of ancient Greek sculptures, now known as the Elgin Marbles, from the Parthenon in Athens (although at this date his composition would have been based upon engravings of the marbles).

Although Thomas Stothard was probably the most prolific illustrator of his time (the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries), he has been relegated to a minor place in the history of English art.
StothardÕs awareness of the market for his work formed the basis of his prolific employment, success, and popularity, and this commercial success did not hinder his success in historical painting endeavors.
StothardÕs response was to alter his style to adjust to the requirements of the engravers.
