  Thomas Tompion Clocks and Biography
One famous name dominates the great period of English clocks in the 17th century, that of Thomas Tompion, who gave to the clockmaking craft the skill and genius of a wonderful artist, for artist he was most emphatically, and was recognised as such at the court of Charles II.
Tompion was born in 1638 and died in 1713, and the clocks and watches he made created a reputation for English work even in those lands of accomplished craftsmanship, France and Germany.
Thomas Tompion, according to the records of the Clockmakers' Company was born in North-hill, Bedfordshire, and is said to have been originally a flsmith.

Tompion made 13 grande-sonnerie spring clocks but only four of them, including the one in Sotheby's sale, were housed in red-turtle shell cases with English ormolu mounts, the auction house said.
The clock was made during the partnership of Thomas Tompion and Edward Banger (the husband of Tompion's niece, Margaret Kent) and has been finished to a particularly high standard, in keeping with other models made during the partnership.
Thomas Tompion was born the son of a flsmith at Ickfield Green - a hamlet in the small parish of Northill, Bedfordshire - and it seems that he was originally trained as a flsmith, along with his younger brother.

Tompion's business was now firmly established and supported by the Royal patronage, his clients included the aristocracy and wealthy merchants of the times.
Tompion collaborated with Marot to produce a number of royal clocks, some for the personal use of the King and Queen and several they requisitioned as gifts to their royal counterparts in Europe and as far field as Tunisia.
It is another of Tompion's wonderfully flamboyant clocks made for King William as a presentation clock, at the end of Tompion's golden period, when he was the master clockmaker in Europe.

Tompion combined the technical advances made by English clockmakers with his own superb workmanship and ingenious designs to produce timepieces that contributed vastly to the fame of English clockmaking in the second half of the seventeenth century.
The dial indicates hours and minutes subdivided into ten-second intervals (on the silvered chapter ring), calendrical information (in various apertures), and the phases, aspects, and age of the moon in its monthly cycle, as well as the times of high tide at London Bridge (on the central revolving disk).

Thomas Tompion was arguably England's greatest watch and clock maker; born in 1639 and trained as a flsmith (which at the time was the nearest thing there was to an engineer) he became Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1703.

I suspect the clock to be from the 1700-1750 period.
I think it might be the later of the two Thomas Finch's listed in Baillie's or it's a very late clock for the earlier one.....

This type of geared model of the solar system, or tellurium, traces its origin to an instrument devised by George Graham and Thomas Tompion in 1712.
That model was soon copied and improved by John Rowley, their neighbor in Fleet Street, and "Master of Mechanics" to George I. Rowley also made many instruments for Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery, who bequeathed his collection to Christ Church, Oxford in 1731.
Rowley was succeeded by his former apprentice, Thomas Wright (d.1767) whose trade card depicts an orrery similar to this example.

When the Royal Observatory at Greenwich was established in 1676, Tompion was chosen to make two clocks, to be wound only once a year, which proved to be more accurate timepieces than those available to other observatories.
Utilizing the new inventions of the cylinder escapement (which enabled the making of flat watches) and the balance spring (discovered by Robert Hooke), he raised clockmaking and watchmaking to a fine art.
Several of his clocks survive and still run.
