 Mordecai Bartley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mordecai Bartley (December 16, 1783 - October 10, 1870) was a Whig politician from Ohio.
Bartley succeeded his son, Thomas W. Bartley as governor, one of only a few instances of this happening in the United States in high offices.
Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1822, Bartley served four terms before declining to be renominated in 1830.

THOMAS W. Upon the resignation of Governor Shannon the Democratic speaker of the senate, Thomas Welles Bartley, became acting governor of Ohio on April 15, 1844, and served until the close of the term in December of the same year.
Here Thomas spent his boyhood helping on the farm, attending school, and imbibing politics, for when he was twelve his father began the first of four consecutive terms in congress.
A strong Van Buren man and a leader of the antibank Democrats, the younger Bartley had lost the nomination for governor at the Democratic state convention to David Tod by a single vote, and thus narrowly escaped opposing his father, the Whig candidate for the office of governor, in the campaign of 1844.

Thomas Welles Bartley (also known as Thomas W. Bartley) (February 11, 1812 - June 20, 1885) was a Democratic politician from Ohio.
Bartley was succeded in office by his father, Mordecai Bartley, one of only a few instances of this occurring in high elected office in the United States.
Bartley sought renomination under the Democratic Party, but lost at the state convention by a single vote - avoiding a contest against his father, who accepted the Whig nomination.

The basin of this river is formed mostly in Devonian shale, and is bounded on the W. by a limestone rim and on the E. by preglacial valleys filled with glacial drift.
At the W. end of the lake are Sandusky and Maumee bays, each with a good natural harbour.
Indian corn, wheat and oats are grown in all parts, but the W. half of the state produces about three-fourths of the Indian corn and two-thirds of the wheat, and in the N. half, especially in the N.W. corner, are the best oat-producing counties.

Thomas B. Andrews was working on the roof of the first brick court house at the time, and he says McLaughlin swung his hat and cheered, holding up to view the trophy of his prowess as a hunter.
Mordecai Bartley occupies a prominent place in the history of Mansfield, as a citizen, a lawyer, and a man. He was a Captain in the war of 1812; was elected to the State Senate in 1817, and was afterward Register of the Virginia military school lands.
Bartley's most frequent antagonist, was the most brilliant man of this whole legal galaxy, and the most attractive speaker.

Thomas, the eldest son, was born in Virginia in 1781, and removed with his parents to Jefferson Co., Ohio, where be lived until 1815, when he came to this county and settled in Springfield Township.
Thomas Ford grew to maturity here, getting little if any education in the district schools, obtaining the principal part by the light of a burning stump or the fire-place.
His father, W. Hedges, was s son of Josiah Hedges, the founder of Tiffin, Ohio, and brother of the late Ellzey Hedges, of this city.

The charge to the jury on the trial of Dr. John W. Hughes, for the murder of Tamzen Parsons, of Bedford, which took place in December, 1865, was acknowledged by the Cleveland Bar to be one of the ablest ever delivered from the Cuyahoga Bench.
In 1842, Judge Tilden was elected to Congress as a Whig, from the district composed of Summit, Portage, and Trumbull counties, and was in the House of Representatives during the exciting debates relative to the annexation of Texas and the Mexican war.
