Thomas BICKETT, one of the few pioneers who are still living, came from Ireland to Butler County in 1823, and, after working in various parts of this State, settled upon his present farm in 1828.
BICKETT was bitten by a rattlesnake one evening as he was crossing Cornplanter Run on his way from his farm to the cabin where his wife was staying.
Thomas BICKETT, one of the few surviving pioneers in Butler County, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in the year 1801, and is the son of Matthew and Jane BICKETT, who had nine children--Mary, Helena, Jane, Henrietta, Thomas, Eliza, Matthew, Margaret and William, who is the third child from the eldest.

As a native of Monroe, NC, and a graduate of Wake Forest College, Thomas Walter Bickett taught school in Winston-Salem and studied law at the University of North Carolina.
In politics, Bickett represented Franklin County in the state legislature and served as the state attorney general for eight years.
In 1917, Thomas Walter Bickett became Governor on the eve of the United States entering World War I. The focus of Bickett's office was for a "fairer and finer State." One area of success was social welfare as juvenile courts were established, service from public health departments was increased, and child labor laws were strengthened.

In the sixteenth century the nations of Europe began a period of exploration and colonization in the "New World." England sought to maintain her interests in the struggle for new territories and resources among other contending nations, principally Spain.
Queen Elizabeth commissioned Sir Walter Raleigh to establish a settlement in the "New World" to secure England's claims to territory.
This new colony was named "Virginia" in honor of Queen Elizabeth, the virgin queen.

The cemetery is located in Tallapoosa Co., northeast of Alexander City, AL.
