Thomas G. Weinandy: Does God Suffer?
Weinandy’s article is particularly helpful in tightening down our fuzzy thinking and demonstrating the consistency and logic of Scripture from Old to New—and even more importantly, flushing to the fore the unchangeable nature of its Inspiration: the Alpha and Omega, First and Last, Beginning and End.
Weinandy’s answer to the question of a suffering God just might surprise you and is nearly certain to make you think.

The Paradox of God: Thoughts on Christian Theism
Thomas Weinandy expresses this well: "Inherent within the Bible's Hebraic, more functional and relational thought forms lie principles and notions - ontological in nature - which pertain to a philosophical understanding of who God is and how he relates to what is other than himself"[5].
When Thomas says we cannot know what God is, "this does not mean that we may say nothing at all about him, but we must realise that he always transcends anything we can say about him"[10].
St Thomas, however, follows the Western tradition in teaching that man can be raised by the grace of the light of glory to the vision of the divine essence itself, although there are degrees of glory and we will even then not know him fully.

No, Not Exactly. - Review - book review Commonweal - Find Articles
Thomas Weinandy certainly agrees that a God impervious to human suffering is not worthy of respect.
Weinandy is at his best in his discussion of the classical notion of the "exchange of properties" (communicatio idiomatum), that is, the predicating of divine and human attributes to one and the same person, the Son incarnate.
Weinandy is at once genuinely traditional and genuinely creative, an admirable balance increasingly rare in contemporary theology.

Determined by the course of the battle, Luther challenges Thomas' authority, and criticizes the different opinions of the schools, the way in which Aristotle is received in scholastic theology, as well as the way in which Thomas deals with issues such as the praesentia realis.
In addition to dealing with Luther's association with Thomas during those years, zur Mdhlen concludes by examining the agreements and differences between Luther and Thomas with respect to the justitia aliena Christi, the certitudo salutis, and the idea that mankind is simul iustus et peccator.
Thomas Weinandy is brought into the discussion to show that Clarke's philosophical thoughts on receptivity should be seen in relation to ideas on the subject that are already in circulation in theology.

Weinandy’s article (as well as, a fortiori, with his book of the same title), I must say that the main weakness of both article and book comes from the fact that the author too readily dismissed Barth and Baltha sar.
Weinandy is to succeed in challenging, and eventually undermining, the idea of a passible God.
I was shocked to read Thomas G. Weinandy’s article and to realize that while having interesting arguments in favor of his thesis and interpretations, he totally ignored the origin of this preoccupation.

That is not the intention, said the Rev. Thomas G. Weinandy, who worked on the document as executive director for the U.S. bishops' secretariat for doctrine and pastoral practices.
In its wake, some American bishops commented in their diocesan newspapers or privately to their priests that they did not regard this as a ban on ordaining gay men and would continue to accept gay candidates on a case-by-case basis.
The bishops said they felt the need for clear guidelines because there were many pastoral ministries for gay people in parishes and dioceses around the country and "confusion" about what was an "authentic" Catholic approach, Weinandy said.
