Research on Dr. Turner shows that he taught biology in Baltimore, Maryland from 1902 to 1910, received his doctorate from Cornell University in 1921, was head of Howard University's Botany Department in 1922 and eventually became the head of the Biological Studies Department at Hampton University.
A nationally known botanist, Turner's work is abstracted in the American Journal of Botany.
