Shepard or Didier Deutsch, and the quality of the remasterings is very good for the most part.
Shepard wasn't, one would have to presume that they liked and approved which takes were used on the original album.
Shepard found an alternate take where Louise reacts audibly to Tulsa and he went with it because he felt it gives you a sense of her involvement and he felt it was probably left off the original album because people might have been confused by it.

Edward Thomas is a very experienced composer who, it seems, is equally at home in the classical domain or with lighter music.
What is especially evident from this recording is that Thomas has a very sure dramatic and theatrical touch and that he is a most effective orchestrator.
Thomas Z. Shepard who was a leading light at CBS/Sony in the days when that label could be considered a serious player in the classical market produces the recording.

The cast headed into the studios at the end of March with producer Thomas Z. Shepard to record the show for RCA Victor.
After the CD was released overseas in early June, it is now being released here in the U.S. For those of you who have been living in a cave, Chicago is a musical about two murderesses and their desperate attempts to gain freedom by way of media attention.
Shepard has also reinstated Roxie's soliloquy which precedes "Roxie" and was cut from the new Broadway cast recording.

SHEPARD, Thomas, clergyman, born in Towcester, England, 5 November, 1605 ; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 25 August, 1649.
He was graduated at Oxford in 1627, ordained in the established church, and in 1630 silenced for non-conformity.
He was silenced again in 1633, and in October, 1635, sailed for this country, settled in Boston, and from that time till his death was pastor of the church in Cambridge, succeeding Thomas Hooker.

You can see the intensity and sheer enjoyment on the faces of the cast, and record producer Thomas Z. Shepard, show producer-director Harold Prince (both frequent Sondheim collaborators), and Sondheim (a notorious perfectionist) become alternately exhilarated and exasperated as they listen and try to solve various problems.
At one point the recording supervisor, Thomas Z. Shephard, says to him, "You're very good and I don't want to spoil something that's potentially marvelous..." Uh oh.

A student of the Yale Graduate School of Music, Thomas Z. Shepard spent 14 years with Columbia Records before joining RCA Records in 1974, becoming Division Vice President of RCA Red Seal, winning numerous Grammy Awards for his work in the production of classical and cast recordings.

This great disc of classical Moog music, "Semi-conducted" (get it?) by Andrew Kazdin and Thomas Z. Shepard, features works by Chabrier, Lecuona, Bizet, and an incredible 14 minute rendition of Ravel's Bolero that fills the entire second side of the record.
With only one sound at a time to work with, reproducing a complex score can involve up to 20 tracks per song, and countless hours of work.
You really have to hand it to Kazdin and Shepard for putting that kind of work into a record that was most probably panned by every music critic of its day.
