Thomas and the Magic Railroad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas and the Magic Railroad was a movie made in 2000 based on the well known TV Series and its American spinoff.
Among the criticisms were complaints of poor acting, bad direction and an incoherent plot, as well as complaints from fans of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends that the film was not true to the original stories and, despite the title, featured relatively little of Thomas.
The Strasburg Railroad was used for shots of the full-sized Indian Valley railroad.

When a "Thomas, the Tank Engine" video is in the VCR, Christopher sits before the television entranced, gazing in rapt wonder at his hero, a plucky little train living in a candy-colored world.
Thomas and his friends can be seen daily on Nickelodeon as part of the long-running show, "Shining Time Station," but Christopher prefers watching the "Thomas" videos; compilations of the train's five minute adventures from the TV series.
For this adult, "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" was needlessly muddy and most of the human cast seemed superfluous.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD
Perhaps it's because as viewers they're so small and the object of their attention is so big, or maybe it's some sort of Jungian collective unconsciousness engrained from the days when such machines were the only means of mass public transportation, but many kids have a steadfast fascination with trains.
Now, Thomas and his friends are ready for the big time as they're headed to the big screen in "Thomas and the Magic Railroad," a full-length film that combines live action with miniature, model-based animation.
With this film, Thomas and company get the big star treatment with the inclusion of notable actors Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda, as well as a longer running time and a more complex and ultimately complicated story than was possible on the TV series.

"Thomas and the Magic Railroad" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Magic exists as gold dust and reflections of light on wet streets.
It also is centred around "magic" and "powers" which although I don't have a problem exposing my daughter to "pretend" magic and using our imaginations, the kind of magic in this film left me with an uneasy feeling in my stomach.
"Thomas and the Magic Railroad" tries to replicate the charm of the original stories (and animated films) and succeeds at times, but overall, the story is weak and except for Alec Baldwin and the woman who plays Stacy Jones, the acting is awful (especially Peter Fonda's).

BBC - Films - review - Thomas and the Magic Railroad
It's equally sad to see "Thomas the Tank's" creator, the late Reverend W Awdry, excised from the credits so that writer-producer-director Britt Allcroft, who can certainly be credited with bringing "Thomas" to television, hogs centre-screen.
Completely lacking the intriguing characterisation, wonder and zip of a good animated film, "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" spells out its simple plot ad nauseam and is so stretched that even averagely bright kids will be offended by the repetition.
In his attempts to squash the nasty diesel engine who is devoutly anti-steam, Mr Conductor is joined by his cousin (Michael E Rodgers), a jolly young lady (Mara Wilson) and her grandfather (Peter Fonda).

For anyone over 6 or unindoctrinated in the immensely successful British TV series created by filmmaker Britt Allcroft in the early '80s, Thomas, the tale of a plucky Tank Engine who talks and rolls his eyes, will come off as, well, The Little Engine That Couldn't.
Things start to go wrong when Thomas and his loquacious locomotive pals are threatened by a bully known as Diesel 10.
