Folksonomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas Vander Wal has stated that folksonomy is a subset of tagging and it is "tagging that works".
For this reason, folksonomies should be clearly distinguished from the folk taxonomies studied by anthropologists and linguists.
Although folk taxonomies are culturally provided and far less amenable to individual invention, they are similar to folksonomies in the sense that both systems reflect a kind of popular consensus, developed in the absence of any systematic rule set.

Taxonomy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Taxonomy (from Greek ταξινομία from the words taxis = order and nomos = law) may refer to either a hierarchical classification of things, or the principles underlying the classification.
Mathematically, a taxonomy is a tree structure of classifications for a given set of objects.
Such taxonomies as those analyzed by Durkheim and Levi-Strauss are sometimes called folk taxonomies to distinguish them from scientific taxonomies that claim to be disembedded from social relations and thus objective and universal.

A taxonomy is a tree structured classification for a set of objects.
In 1990, based on new discoveries showing the relationships between species it was proposed that the bipartite prokaryote-eukaryote view of life be replaced with a tripartite super kingdom scheme of bacteria, archaea, and eucarya.

Summary of Glasbern Meeting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The Taxonomy was envisioned as a theory-free list of characteristics that could empirically be shown to contribute to a positive life, and further, that could be developed in children and adolescents in collaboration with Youth Development programs.
The broad goals of the VIA Taxonomy of Strengths and Virtues are to identify characteristics associated with the "good life"; to develop valid and reliable measures of these characteristics; and to apply these measures and accompanying empirical research to Youth Development programs.
Another concern was that, despite efforts to present the taxonomy as nonexclusive and non-exhaustive, other researchers, believing the taxonomy to be closed to new ideas, might be loath to contribute to or suggest changes to the taxonomy.

A taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary of terms and or phrases.
A taxonomy may be used for two major reasons: 1) to limit the choices of field values to a controlled set; and 2) to use terms that are defined by a known source.
Taxonomies may also be the sources of structured controlled vocabularies for other IMS implementations, such as the educational level, skills and goals within the Learner Profile.

A human rights/disability taxonomy is necessary to meet these requirements, because the classification provides a common language to facilitate design, implantation and monitoring of a convention.

Understanding information taxonomy helps build better apps   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Taxonomy represents the foundation upon which information architecture stands, and all well-rounded developers should have at least a basic understanding of taxonomy to ensure that they can create organized, logical applications.
The term taxonomy was originally borrowed from the life sciences discipline, where a plant or animal is placed in a single spot describing its hierarchical relationship to other plants and animals.
Using the classic model-view-controller framework, taxonomy structure is the model and taxonomy view is the view.

 A Taxonomy of See-Through Tools
We also describe a taxonomy of see-through tools, which provides both an overview of the see-through interface system for those interested in understanding its potential, and an understanding of the ways that these tools may vary that will aid implementors of such tools.
While their taxonomy is concerned almost exclusively with function, ours includes issues of triggering, appearance, motion, and instantiation.
We have constructed a taxonomy of see-through tools by looking for variability in the ways they respond to five basic events: triggering, generating an action, drawing, moving, and instantiating.

With the steady increase in scientific knowledge and understanding since then, enhanced by new analytical tools such as DNA, many aspects of today's taxonomies may tomorrow be expanded or replaced by radically new propositions, more or less tempered by disagreements between the "splitters" who emphasize differences and the "lumpers" who concentrate on similarities.
In contrast to formal zoological taxonomy, common names of animals seldom have anything to do with hidden hierarchical relationships among species, but are simply descriptive, are used in everyday discourse in specific regions or localities, and may change over time.
