Thomaston (LSD-28) was laid down on 3 March 1953 at Pascagoula, Miss., by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on 9 February 1954; sponsored by Mrs.
Thomaston took her in tow and headed for Pearl Harbor, transferring the tow to Cree (ATF-84) on the 12th.
Within a mile of the accident, Thomaston dispatched two boats to the scene and recovered not only four of the passengers and crew of the CH-46 (the remainder were picked up by helicopter) but the crew from one of Valley Forge's boats which had capsized upon launching.

A native of Epping, New Hampshire, the son of farmers and the grandson of Revolutionary War hero General Joseph Cilley, Jonathan Cilley was the "adopted" son of Thomaston, Maine.
He was soon chosen to serve in the Maine Legislature and eventually rose to the position of Speaker of the Maine State House.
Thomaston Historical Society is greatly indebted to the families of Jonathan Cilley Tibbitts, Jr., Jonathan "Casey" Tibbitts, and Gregory Tibbitts, the great-grandson and great-great-grandsons of Jonathan Cilley, for their generosity and for the opportunity to transcribe and preserve these valuable artifacts.

Johnson pulled the van over at the corner of Dexter and Old County roads and noticed that while Hokkanen was sporting a Kerry pin on his hat and a sticker on the back of his van, there was a pile of Bush-Cheney signs loaded in the back of the van.
In a separate incident that Thomaston police are not linking to Thursday's event, 11 Bush-Cheney signs were found in a ditch at the end of Sunrise Terrace, near Wadsworth Street on Sunday afternoon.
