The Thompson River mining district in Sanders County encompasses most of the Thompson River drainage (the northwestern portion is not included in the district).
The bedrock along the Clark Fork and Flathead River valleys between Ravalli and the Idaho boundary formed during the Precambrian era and is mostly sedimentary (Belt) formations.

Thompson’s first assignment was to determine the longitude and latitude of the North West Company posts that might be affected by the Jay Treaty of 1794.
Because the river flowed north, Thompson was not sure that it was the Columbia…from its source at Columbia Lake, the Columbia River flows five hundred miles north along the base of the Canadian Rocky Mountains before it turns south and west to the Pacific Ocean.

The Thompson River is an often overlooked area of the Jocassee Gorges - except by trout fishermen that is. In my opinion, the Thompson is home to the Queen of all the falls in the area - Big Falls (Thompson Falls).
We've made several trips to the Thompson over the past few years, the latest being August 7, 2003 where we revisited High Falls and went on to find Tumblin' Fun Falls on the nearby Mill Creek.
There's no definite trail from here down river, but you might be able to follow a faint fisherman's trail on the left side of the river.

Last year I missed out on my usual trip to the Thompson river because of a combination of factors - reports were that the fish were not evident and the river was very high which makes for difficult and dangerous fishing.
The long hot summer had melted the snows in the upper mountains and the river was lower than anyone in town remembered.
The weather was still sunny and warm so I hiked down the river and found a comfortable rock seat and painted, in hopes of coming away with something of value if I couldn't have another steelhead memory.
