Submachine gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Italians were the first to have a submachine gun in the war, the somewhat odd, Villar Perosa which entered service in 1915 and had sort of a heavy double automatic pistol configuration, with two 25 round box magazines feeding each barrel at 300 rounds per minute for each barrel.
The Thompson SMGs had been in development at the same time and even earlier as the Bergman and Beretta, but development went on hold in 1917, when the US and the weapon's designer entered the war.
America and its allies used the Thompson SMG, especially the simplified M1 version that did away with the Tommy's drum magazine and some of the machined parts.

 Thompson submachine gun
The Thompson submachine gun, also known as the Tommy gun, was an American submachine gun that became infamous during the prohibition era.
It was a common sight in gangster films of the time; real-life gangsters referred to the tommy gun as the "Chicago type writer" and enjoyed its compact size and high volume of automatic fire, automatic weapons being legal for civilian possession at the time.
Designed during World War I by General John T. Thompson, the Tommy gun was available in the.45 Caliber ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge, and was used by the U.S. Army and British Commandos through World War II.

The SMG in WW II was the principal weapon of infantry section commanders, but were also used by dismounted tank crews, infantry officers, scouts, and other troops whose duties demanded personal protection but would be interfered with by the cumbersome service rifle.
The Thompson submachinegun was named for its invention, US Brigadier General John Tagliaferro Thompson, who spent most of his career as an Ordnance officer involved in small arms manufacture and design.
Thompson retired again 1918, and his new weapon was not perfected in time to be used in World War One.

SMGs are small to medium sized weapons that are capable of, sometimes limited to, fully automatic fire.
Tactically, SMGs are used when you know you will be going into combat, like a SWAT unit or VIP bodyguards, their higher firepower than typical handguns being a large plus.
SMGs also have a unique role, in that the weapons can be fitted with a sound suppressor and subsonic ammunition, and used by covert combat units to deal with trouble silently.

The MP18 was used in a large numbers by the stormtroopers which were so effective in the final year of the war, although they were not enough to prevent Germany's collapse in November of that year.
In the inter-war years the submachine gun became notorious as a gangster weapon; the iconic image of zoot-suited James Cagney types wielding drum-magazine Thompson SMG s caused military planners to shun the weapon.
The concept was a sound one, and the subsequent proliferation of assault rifles, most famously the AK-47, has seen the submachine gun fade from mainstream military use.

But what I am arguing is to not so much to maintain realistic-minded gameplay, but to emphasise the real-world-roles of these types of guns, while taking into account that most DOD engagements occur at very SHORT ranges, when compared to the average combat death in the real world wars (which is like 130 yards).
The Thompson as an example was primarily issued to officers and not the privates that might have been doing most of work clearing buildings.

The "Navy Model" Thompson, as often issued to the Marines in the Pacific (the Navy being the first of the armed forces to purchase the weapon) was identical to the regular M1928, but had a horizonal foreend and the cyclic reduced to 600rpm or so.
So many Thompson's were lost in the North Atlantic to German subs, people said the bottom of the Grand Banks were lined with Thompson guns, but still, many, many thousands were received and used.
When the US finally started buying the Thompson gun, they were fitted with the horizontal Navy fore end from the start, and the 50 round drum was issued, since no 30 round mag was available yet.

The Thompson fired a hard-hitting, although short-ranged,.45 caliber pistol round from a 20- or 30-round clip or a 50-round drum, which was less popular for military use.
It was lighter than the Thompson and much easier to manufacture, and fired a slower 500 rounds per minute, which helped control the recoil.
Many may also argue that it was more accurate than the Thompson, up to 100 meters or so (as opposed to the Thompson's 50 meters, in this case), but in truth both guns were pretty much just as accurate and the recoil did much of the determining of the accuracy and effectiveness over range.

Suomi SMGs were always issued to the most capable men and used with devastating effect during close combat in the forests.
The original Suomi SMG's thick barrel jacket was a liability when defending a bunker; it could not fit through small firing slits and if the gun was kept completely inside the bunker, the shooter was blinded by the muzzle flash and gunsmoke.
In practice the heavier jacket was often kept semi-permanently attached to the tank turret and a standard barrel jacket was attached to the weapon when it was taken outside the tank.
