		Thonon-les-Bains (30,000 inhabitants) is a sous-préfecture of the department of Haute-Savoie, located on the southern shore of lake Léman. Thonon is the capital city of the traditional province of Chablais, the northernmost province of Savoy, which was highly disputed between the Catholics and the Protestants after the Reformation.
		Thonon was then a small village built around a priory and protected by the fortress of Allinge-Neuf, which was built on a hill located a few kilometers away from the village.
		Thonon was then the main residence of the ducal court and remained so all along the XVth century, attracting several immigrants who dramatically increased the population and activity of the city.

		Mal connue pour le haut moyen-âge, son histoire est très bien documentée à partir de 1270, en raison de la conservation des comptes du châtelain comtal des Allinges, dans le ressort duquel se trouvait le village avant de devenir au début du XIVe siècle le siège du "mandement".
		Le château, initialement forteresse et prison, est rasé et, reconstruit vers 1410, devient une résidence d'agrément comprenant de beaux jardins et des logis luxueux, plus confortables que le simple pavillon de chasse de Ripaille ; on y donne de grandes fêtes.
		Le château de Ripaille a accueilli le pape Eugène IV vers 1440.
