LMF: Freyja: the goddess with the gib cats
In Egils Saga the hero's daughter, a young woman called Thorgerda, threatened to commit suicide after her brother was killed, and declared, ‘I shall take no food until I sup with Freyja'.
In Saxo she is said to be one of the ‘wives of the kinsfolk' of Freyr, and to have been put into a brothel along with her companions.
Thorgerda in the later sagas is represented as consorting with trolls and evil creatures of all kinds, and there is no doubt of the hostility with which she was regarded, and of the sinister light which played round her cult for the story-tellers of a Christian age.

 Northvegr - Njal's Saga
Hauskuld and Hrut came to the wedding with a very great company, and the sons of Hauskuld, Thorleik, and Olof, were there; the bride, too, came along with them, and her daughter Thorgerda came also, and she was one of the fairest of women; she was then fourteen winters old.
The bride sat in the middle of the cross bench on the dais; but on one hand of her sat her daughter Thorgerda, and on the other Thorkatla Asgrim Ellidagrim's son's daughter.
Thorgerda took to housekeeping at Gritwater, and was a good housewife.

Klasickým příkladem budiž divoká islandská královna Thorgerda v Zeyerově Románu o věrném přátelství Amise a Amila: pod katolickým ethosem a romantickou barvitostí jde o zajímavou studii mužské a ženské mentality.

Hauskuld said the same thing to him a second time, and then Hrut answered, "Fair enough is this maid, and many will smart for it, but this I know not, whence thief's eyes have come into our race." Then Hauskuld was wroth, and for a time the brothers saw little of each other.
ENDNOTES: (1) Thorgerda was daughter of Thorstein the Red who was Olaf the White's son, Ingialld's son, Helgi's son.
So the maiden was sprinkled with water, and had this name given her, and there she grew up, and got like her mother in looks and feature.

Northvegr - THE STORY OF GISLI THE OUTLAW
Now all is quiet, and Gisli goes again to Thorgerda, and is with her another winter.
Now, it is said that Thorgerda goes to the earth-house and means to give Gisli his breakfast, but there was a panel between the larder and the room where Helgi lay.
Thorgerda asks why he behaves so, and why he clambers up to the roof like a thief, and cannot be still.

According to popular belief he still 'drees his weird' in Fairy Land, and is one day expected to revisit earth.
Unquestionably the Venus of the Hürselberg, of the Eildon Hill and of so many other locations all over Europe is the ancient goddess Holda, or Thorgerda.
But the legend as it shaped itself in the Middle Ages is indicative of the struggle between the new and the old faith.
