 Middle-earth Mythology - Oakenshield, Thorin
Thorin II Oakenshield (2746-2941 TA)was Durin's Heir in the late Third Age, high-king of the Dwarves in exile.
This was accomplished, Thorin winning new reknown in the Battle of Five Armies afterward, when a horde of goblins descended upon Erebor to snatch the spoils, although he lost his life in these deeds.
Thorin II became known as Thorin Oakenshield because, when disarmed during the Battle of Azanulbizar, he used an oak bough as a weapon.

 Oakenshield - Tolkien Gateway
In that battle, Thorin's shield was broken, so he cut a bough from an oak-tree with his axe, and used that instead to fend off his enemies' blows, or to club them.
It was that oaken branch that gave Thorin his surname, but it did not completely save him from injury - it is recorded that he was wounded in the battle.
That is the legend of Thorin's surname within Tolkien's tales, but in fact it comes from a real-world source.

To this end he gathered about him a party of Dwarvish adventurers, and together with Bilbo the hobbit, (hired as a burglar) set off upon the dangerous journey across wilderland to slay the dragon and reclaim his realm.
After capture by orcs and Elves, they eventually reached their goal and despite many tribulations, not least among which was the slaying of the dragon and a war with the men of Laketown, the mountain kingdom was at last regained.
For all his pride and stubbornness, Thorin possessed, nonetheless, a noble character, and acquitted himself bravely as befitted a direct descendent of Durin the deathless.

Given that Thorin's name was not established until this point, this is the earliest possible point where Christopher Tolkien's comment in [Treason] could apply: "There is no question that the genealogy as first devised in _The Hobbit_ was Thorin Oakenshield - Thrain - Thror".
Originally, the discoverer was Thorin's father, but when Tolkien came to expand the Dwarvish ancestry he seems to have missed the significance here of Thorin describing the stone as being his father's.
Thorin does not give any such indication that he is not speaking of his literal father, and I know of no example of a Dwarf referring to his king as "my father" when that was not literally true.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Orcrist
The sword of Thorin Oakenshield, discovered by him in a troll-hoard on his journey to Erebor, and buried with him after his death in the Battle of Five Armies.
We are told there that Orcrist '...lay now upon the breast of Thorin...' (The Fellowship of the Ring II 3, The Ring Goes South).
This seems to suggest that the sword was actually placed within Thorin's tomb, and not just placed on it, though this text is admittedly ambiguous.
