This parish lies on the south bank of the Tees opposite the town of Stockton, in which borough a large portion of it is included for parliamentary purposes Its total area, including 59 acres of water surface, is 1,696 acres, and number of inhabitants about 15,000.
It is situated on the south bank of the Tees, opposite Stockton, with which it is connected by a stone bridge of five arches, commenced in 1764, and completed in 1771.
Thornaby was formerly a township under Stainton, but was constituted a distinct parish in 1844.

The church is said to be one of the  oldest and smallest buildings in the Tees Valley, still in full use for weddings, funerals, baptisms and christenings.
The  Victorian town centre was developed in the 19th century around the banks of the River Tees, which was a centre for heavy industry and shipbuilding which thrived on what is today known as the  Teesdale site.

The result was a dramatic straightening in the course of the River Tees east of Stockton and a resulting confusion in the exact local boundary between Durham and Yorkshire particularly with the transfer of the Stockton race course to the south of the river
During the Civil War Stockton castle was a Royalist stronghold and in1640 when a treaty was signed making the Tees a boundary between the forces of Scotland and the King, this castle stayed in Royalist hands.
The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 brought about further significant increases in the trade and population of Stockton as lead from the dales could now be quickly brought to the town along with coal from mines in the Bishop Auckland area.

W Op / Air Gunner - Sgt William Robert Martin RAF, aged 25, of Netherfield, Nottinghamshire, buried Thornaby on Tees Cemetery.
However why would two of the crew be returned all the way to Thornaby on Tees for burial if it were to have crashed in Ireland?
Not only that it is the only Hudson to have crashed near Kildale and witnesses also report the aircraft being on the Kildale hillside.
