Thornton Waldo Burgess is the son of Caroline F. Haywood and Thornton W. Burgess Sr.
Burgess was brought up by his mother in Sandwich after his father died in the year of his birth.
The Thornton W. Burgess Society was incorporated in 1976 "to inspire reverence for wildlife and a concern for the natural environment." It is a continuation of the influence Burgess had with youth through his delightful stories.

In this letter to Harrison Cady, July 21, 1965, Burgess asks Cady to read "An Old Man's Dream" concerning his wishes for his property "Laughing Brook" to be maintained as a "mecca for children." Burgess died in 1965, the same year this letter was written.
In 1976 his dream turned into reality with the formation of the Thornton W. Burgess Society.
The very thought has occured to me that children might like to contribute to save the home of Peter Rabbit and might be reached through the Libraries and the Schools.
