Thornton Creek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thornton Creek is a stream that flows over 17 miles from Shoreline, Washington, USA through the Northgate and Lake City neighborhoods of Seattle.
Early in the 1900's the creek was a spawning ground for salmon including the endangered Chinook salmon.
However the areas surrounding the creek were developed without regard for the importance of maintaining a riparian corridor and it has now become an urban watershed.

Lessons from the Collapse of the Schoharie Creek Bridge
The Schoharie Creek Bridge was one of several bridges constructed by the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) for a 900 km (559-mile) superhighway across New York State in the early 1950’s.
The Schoharie Creek Bridge collapsed on the morning of April 5, 1987 during the spring flood (Boorstin, 1987, Thornton et al., 1988).
Due to the collapse of the Schoharie Creek Bridge and other bridges failing in a similar manner, bridge inspectors were further trained to recognize scour potential by examining and comparing any changes in the conditions from previous inspections (Huber, 1991).

The complexity of the effort to daylight Ravenna Creek and other waterways appears however to depend less on physical or hydraulic challenges than on political and institutional barriers.

The situation at Kelsey Creek Shopping Center is similar to a long-running story in Seattle, where the owners of property next to Northgate Mall want to redevelop, but several citizen groups have insisted on daylighting Thornton Creek, which runs beneath a large parking lot.
One difference is that no salmon run through the underground pipe carrying Thornton Creek; Chinook salmon have been spotted in Kelsey Creek beyond the shopping center in the area of Larsen Lake, the creek's headwaters a short distance south of the parking lot.
