Thorondor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien's Middle-earth universe Thorondor was the greatest of the Eagles of Manwë.
Thorondor (Quenya, Sorontar, both of which mean King of Eagles) was sent by Manwë, King of the Valar, to watch over the Noldor after they arrived in Beleriand.
During the War of Wrath, Thorondor and Eärendil led the Eagles in battle with the Dragons, and may have fought with Ancalagon the Black.

It was cool that Thorondor spoke and showed signs of personality, qualities missing in the Silmarillion--despite the integral part he plays in some stories.
But I must say, Thorondor's presence here in Middle Earth is a bit comforting, because it means that Manwe is still keeping watch on things...hasn't given up on the children of Illuvatar.
That is, of course, provided that Manwe and Thorondor still have the same relationship as in the Silmarillion, which doesn't seem too far fetched.

The rushing of the wings of Thorondor was like the noise of the winds of Manwë;, and he seized the body in his mighty talons, and soaring suddenly above the darts of the Orcs he bore the King away.
There Thorondor espided them, and he sent two of his eagles to their aid; and the eagles bore them up and brought them beyond the Encircling Mountains to the secret vale of Tumladen and the hidden city of Gondolin, which no Man yet had seen.

Thorondor's ultimate origins are uncertain, but he seems to have existed before the beginning of the First Age - perhaps a very long time before.
Earlier versions of the story published in The History of Middle-earth state more explicitly that Thorondor was one of these, and that he even remained in contact with Manw‘ during the First Age.
The only clue is a passage that appears in The Lord of the Rings, referring to '...old Thorondor, who built his eyries in the inaccessible peaks of the Encircling Mountains when Middle-earth was young.' It's plain from this that Thorondor departed Middle-earth some time after the end of the First Age.

Thorondor only appears in the Silmarillion, but is listed as Gwaihir's and Landroval's father.
It was Thorondor who picked up Maedhros and Fingon from Thangorodrim, and also saved Fingolfin's dead body from being fed to Morgoth's wolves.
Dragons were probably also able to reproduce, as during the War of Wrath there were quite a few of them flying dragons (Ancalagon probably had a lovely time during the centuries).

But Melkor also was there, and he came to the house of Fëanor, and there he slew Finwë King of the Noldor before his doors, and spilled the first blood in the Blessed Realm; for Finwë alone had not fled from the horror of the Dark.
Thorondor had a maia spirit inside of him, and of that Im sure.
