Sutton Foster, who plays Millie, has been there before: in 1997’s short-lived Annie revival, she played the "Star to Be." Well, we can officially take the "to be" from that title now.
Millie’s book, by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan, that is fleshier and funnier than the late Morris’s original screenplay, but hews to the same basic plot.
Foster’s Millie is like what 42nd Street’s Peggy Sawyer might be if she had a personality; her self-examining solo number in the second act, "Gimme, Gimme," deservedly brings down the house, not just because she sings it so well but also because she acts it so clearly.

Its shortcomings notwithstanding, Thoroughly Modern Millie has enough going for it to insure a lengthy stay at the Marquis -- the same theaterwhere not too many years ago Julie Andrews made a last and much praised appearance in another staged version of one of her films Victor/Victoria.
Millie comes to New York from Kansas to pursue her dream of becoming "thoroughly modern" and marrying for money instead of love.
The cleverest is the office scene in which the deliciously overbearing Mark Kudisch puts Millie through her steno and typing paces with "The Speed Test", a nod to Gilbert and Sullivan deftly updated by Scanlan and justifiably given the full company treatment.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is not a bad show.
The story of a small town girl arriving in 1920's New York, where she learns about love, battles a white slavery ring and becomes "thoroughly modern" has plenty of laughs and showcases some fine talent.
While Thoroughly Modern Millie is not altogether bad, at almost $100 a seat, it is nowhere near good enough.

For fans of the genre, however, Thoroughly Modern Millie is an effective musical with ridiculous plot twists, a romantic ending, and a score from Andre Previn and Elmer Bernstein.
