Thorfinn Karlsefni (Old Norse: Þorfinnr Karlsefni, Icelandic: Þorfinnur Karlsefni) was an Icelandic explorer who circa 1010 AD led an attempt to settle Vinland with three ships and 160 settlers.
Among the settlers were Freydís Eiríksdóttir and Thorvald Eriksson, half-sister and brother of Leif Eriksson.
In the early twentieth century, Einar Jónsson, an Icelandic sculptor, created a statue of Thorfinn Karlsefni which was placed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Thorvald found a large, flat headland on a forested bay, walked around for a while, and declared, "This is a lovely place, and here I should like to make my home." Then they made for the ship, and saw three mounds on the sands up inside the headland.
Although Thorvald was killed in this battle, he turns up in later stories, one indication that the sagas are far from reliable historical documents.

The voyages of Thorvald Eriksson and Freydis Erikssdottir-described as separate voyages in The Greenlanders' Saga-are told here as part of the Karlsefni expedition.
This account gives less prominence to the Eriksson family, though in both accounts Leif the Lucky is a heroic, magnanimous figure who converts the Grenlanders to Christianity.
In Greenlanders' Saga, Leif Eriksson builds several houses and calls the camp Leifsbudir, and all the subsequent voyagers use this same location.

Thorvad and Freydis Eriksson arrived and are not willing to share Lief's house, Freydis taunted her husband to kill the brothers, which they did, but would not kill the five women.

Thorvald the Bold lived in Norway and made his living plundering and raiding local villages and towns with his friend and fellow Viking, Bob the Inadequate.
Although Bob wasn't much of a Viking warrior like Thorvald (heck, he wasn't much of anything since he was so short), they were good friends and enjoyed each other's company.
There was a sign nearby that read "LEIF ERIKSSON WAS HERE." The place was completely uninhabited except for a village of natives in the distance.....and Thorvald and Bob WERE NOT going to take their chances.
