Tarot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tarot was not widely adopted by mystics, occultists and secret societies until the 18th and 19th century.
Tarot became increasingly popular beginning in 1910, with the publication of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, which took the step of including symbolic images related to divinatory meanings on the numeric cards.
Tarot is referenced in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Thoth Tarot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thoth Tarot /təʊt 'tær.əʊ/ is a Tarot deck painted by Lady Frieda Harris according to instructions from Aleister Crowley.
Crowley originally intended the Thoth deck to be a three-month project aimed at updating the traditional pictorial symbolism, perhaps best demonstrated by the Rider-Waite-Smith deck; however, it was to span five years, between 1938 and 1943, as the scope of the project grew ever wider.
This initial printing was of markedly inferior quality, and in 1977 Harris' paintings were rephotographed for a second edition; the current edition is based on a further update that took place in 1986.

Thelemapedia: The Encyclopedia of Thelema & Magick | Tarot
The set of 78 images, rich with symbolic meaning, is considered by students of this "occult" or "esoteric" Tarot (tarotists practising tarotism) to be independent of the particular representation as a deck of cards; consequently they focus on the study of the images (and their symbolic meanings) as distinct from any particular instance.
In contrast to the Thoth deck's colorful artistry, the illustrations on Paul Foster Case's B.O.T.A. Tarot deck are fl line drawings on white cards; this is an unlaminated deck intended to be colored by its owner.
Other esoteric decks include the Golden Dawn Tarot which is based on a deck by SL MacGregor Mathers, the Tree of Life Tarot whose cards are stark symbolic catalogs, and the Cosmic Tarot which is unusual for an esoteric deck because it is fully-illustrated.

 Tarot - Crystalinks
The origins of Tarot are somewhat obscure, the most common theories go to ancient Egypt and Thoth and the connection to the ancient mystery school teachings.
Tarot as we know it today is a collection of images and symbols from a wide variety of cultures, from the ancient Greeks and Romans to the prehistoric Norse peoples, from the ancient religions of India and Egypt to the medieval courts of Italy and France.
However they came to be, the images of Tarot, like all true symbols, resound spontaneous self-expressions from the psyche's deepest springs; and for that reason they hold up magic mirrors to whatever reactions we bring them.

Thelemapedia: The Encyclopedia of Thelema & Magick | Thoth Tarot
The Thoth Tarot, also called the Book of Thoth, is the deck of 78 tarot cards designed by Aleister Crowley and illustrated by Lady Frieda Harris.
The entire deck is designed to be a pictoral representation of the Qabalah and especially the Tree of Life, a system of ten spheres and 22 interconnecting paths that is used to organize mystical concepts.
Although the origin of the Tarot in general is unknown, there is a definite beginning to Crowley's beautiful and intelligent rendition of this symbol system.

 The Thoth Tarot
Above all others, I do not use my Thoth deck for divination, in honor of the bottomless well of secrets that is found within the images, but it is reserved for meditations and contemplations.
My purposes here in presenting the Thoth are, for one, simply to familarize people with this fabulous resource, and for another, to briefly interject the fruits of my own contemplations as to more precisely what the subjects and potentials of the cards may truly be.
Some of the symbolism seems to imply what is seemingly typical for the Thoth- a rather precocious awareness of the current subjects that are the focus of science: chaos, turbulence, non-linearity and self-organization.

Thpth Tarot Deck Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The Thoth deck seems to evoke strong emotional responses from people who are familiar with it.
The deck is rich in symbolism and even if you knew little or nothing about the Tarot, the art combined with the one word interpretations on the cards are enough to give you a strong feeling for how the card should be interpreted.
Thoth fans will disagree, but I do not recommend this deck for a beginner unless one has a teacher available or is willing to put some serious time and effort into study.

I would say that Tarot Divnitors are not advised for this book because Crowley does not use the cards to fortell anothers future, but rather as meditative devices to alter ones consciousness and peer into the unknown world, seeing the other universe - that is prophecy.
The Book of Thoth is the most original book to date on the Tarot system and highly reccomended for anyone looking to understand truly what the cards mean, as well as Crowleyites and occultists in general.
The Thoth Tarot has become one of the most popular Tarot decks in the world, and The Book of Thoth is Crowley's last word on the subject.

In a tarot reading, you shuffle the cards and then you lay them out in a specific manner such as the Celtic Cross method or the Tree of Life method.
Each tarot card is an archetypal symbol that represents a field of experience, or a function, or an idea.
If you are really good with understanding the representations of the tarot then you can construct any event, idea, attitude, or personality that you want the TARGET to follow just by placing the cards between your energy source and the structural link representing your target.

 Chiron and the Tarot
It has been noted that in Tarot, Chiron can be associated with Major Arcanum I, The Magician, Major Arcanum XII, The Hanged Man (who voluntarily "hangs him/herself up" in order to gain wisdom for the good of mankind), or Major Arcanum IX, The Hermit.
Interestingly, in the Native American Tarot, Arcanum V is the Shaman -- the master teacher of initiates and the healer.
BTW, I believe that blending the disciplines of astrology, tarot and numerology is highly Chirotic and sooner or later, sustained and serious work with one of these systems will lead to exploration of the others.
