Thus Newspeak is an attempt by Orwell to describe a deliberate intent to exploit this decadence with the aim of oppressing its speakers.
The basic idea behind Newspeak was to remove all shades of meaning from language, leaving simple dichotomies (pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, good thoughts and thoughtcrimes) which reinforce the total dominance of the State.
Some maintain that to make certain words or phrases "unspeakable" (thoughtcrime) restricts what ideas may be held (Newspeak) and is therefore tantamount to censorship.

In George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four the government ("The Party" or Ingsoc) attempts to control not only the speech actions, but the thoughts of its subjects, labelling unapproved thoughts with the Newspeak term thoughtcrime.
He also makes remarks to the effect that "Thoughtcrime is the only crime that matters," meaning that the totalitarian Ingsoc regime only cares that the population is not planning to overthrow it.
Thus it is purely on the basis of the thought or mood of the involuntarily committed person that he is deprived of freedom.

Thanks for opening up that world to me. Although I do not dabble as much as I once did in the world of MOOs, I do keep up my blog regularly (though sadly, it has been relegated to describe mundane daily tasks most of the time).
