  Pipe and Pipe Threads
There are many pipe thread specifications but they fall into one of two categories: The North American or US Standard and the Rest of the world.
The dryseal thread differs in that the roots of the threads are slightly more truncated than the crests.
Originally, the OD of pipe was defined by it's ID. Given a wall thickness suitable to holding the required pressure (using the materials at the time) the OD was determined.

  pipe threads
Pipe thread sizes are described much as bolt sizes are, although the shapes are different.
For example, “½–14 NPT” identifies a pipe thread with a nominal outside diameter of ½ inch and 14 threads to the inch, made according to the NPT standard.
To accomplish this, the threads become shallower the farther they are from the end of the pipe or fitting.

Pipe threads must be formed more accurately, because 100% of the thread height must be cut by the tap or other pipe-threading tool to maintain the standard thread profile.
The tapered thread permits pipes to be disassembled and reassembled frequently.
An accurately cut thread profile is necessary to ensure that when the connection between the threaded parts is tightened the thread crest and root contact before the thread flanks do so that contact is established along the entire thread profile when the parts are assembled.

The taper of the thread is I in 16 or 0.75 in./ft measured on the diameter and along the axis.
Threads in pipe couplings made in accordance with these specifications are straight (parallel) threads of the same thread form as the American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread specified in B.1.
The basic pitch diameter for both the external and internal straight pipe threads is equal to the pitch diameter of the American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread at the gaging notch (dimension E1 of Table 2), which is the same as at the large end of tire internal taper pipe thread.

Pipe may be furnished with one end flanged and the other end with FastiteĀ® bell, plain end, or other type end as may be required.
Prior to assembly of the flange on the pipe, a commercial-grade thread compound is applied to the threads to ensure leak-free fabrication.
Flanges furnished on pipe are not interchangeable in the field and generally cannot be removed after fabrication without damaging the pipe or flange threads.

The NPT threads have a taper of ¾” for 12” of length or approximately 3½°.
Threads are cut deeper at the end of the pipe causing a wall thickness reduction.
This requires that the threaded portion of a schedule 40 fitting must have extra material under the threaded portion for the wall thickness until it equals that of a Schedule 80 pipe.

These threads are intended for Pipes suitable for screwing and for cocks, valves and other fittings to be connected to screwed Pipes.
These threads are intended for the mechanical assembly of the component parts of fittings, cocks, valves, accessories etc. If these assemblies must be pressure tight this will be achieved by compressing two surfaces other than the thread and the use of jointing medium if necessary e.g.
For external threads two classes of tolerance on the pitch diameter are provided, class "GB" is used for general applications and will be supplied where no tolerance class is stated."GA" tolerance class is half that of "GB" and is used for special applications.

Thread And Insert Mills For No-Leak Pipe Threads
New thread mills and insert mills from Emuge Corp. (www.emuge.com) are designed to solve problems of leaking pipe joints in the petroleum and natural gas industries associated with traditional machine tapping or lay-down threading methods.
The spiral-fluted thread mills produce NPT/API threads in diameters of 0.125 in.
The design incorporates a large cutter diameter with high profile correction to ensure true-to-gage threads and an extended milling section that allows for longer thread lengths as required for API line pipe threads.

A kind of tubing or pipe connection where a nut, and then a sleeve or ferrule is placed over a copper or plastic tube, and is compressed tightly around the tube as the nut is tightened, forming a positive grip and seal without soldering.
Thread sealants should not be used on compression joints, and may actually interfere with proper installation, causing them to leak - or the sealant can act as a lubricant and make it hard to tell if the connection is overtightened.
Straight pipe threads do not form a tight seal, but are often used with a flange, gasket and locknut where a pipe or valve goes through a tank wall.

Non-curing pipe compounds: one of the oldest methods of sealing the spiral leak paths of threaded joints, pipe compounds are pastes made from oils and fillers.
Pipe fittings are often backed off to achieve special alignments for bends, elbows or gauges, sacrificing the correct pre-stress.
Conventional pipe compounds are slow and messy to assemble, and interfere with the torque needed to obtain the correct pre-stress.

Technical Tips: Effects of Pipe Dope on ABS Plastic
The body, riser, and inlet threads on Hunter Professional and Institutional series sprinklers as well as most other brands of sprinklers are manufactured with a durable plastic material called ABS (this material is also sold under a number of brand names other than ABS).
When pipe dope comes into contact with ABS plastic, certain oil based chemicals in the pipe dope attack the plastic and cause it to become very weak and brittle.
Pipe dope is intended to be used as a sealant on metal-to-metal pipe threads only and thus should never be used as a sealant on sprinkler inlet threads manufactured with ABS.

Patent 4964305: Method and apparatus for gaging pipe threads
This invention relates to the gauging of pipe threads and more particularly to methods and apparatus for marking of pipe to very accurately determine the engagement of seal and abutment surfaces and the degree of makeup of threads with simple inexpensive equipment.
As gage threads are perfect for all practical purposes their make up with product threads would indicate the departure from nominal tolerance of the product thread and the circumferential lines scribed by the stencil would indicate the departure from nominal.
As gaging at a factory is under clean conditions and the pipe is truly round the gages will indicate true thread conditions and any deviation from nominal as shown in these figures will be caused by an outside influence and if the deviation is sufficient the joint may be discarded.

 Manual Fittings with Pipe Threads
While on the subject of pipe threads, we need to pass along that the nomenclature used for specifying pipe thread sizes can be quite confusing to those not familiar with pipe terminology.
When a pipe thread size is given, such as 3/8" NPT (National Pipe Thread), the 3/8" refers to the inside diameter of the pipe.
Since pipe has quite a thick wall and the threads are cut on the outside diameter of the pipe, the actual thread O.D. is much larger than 3/8-inch.

Threaded Pipe Fittings & Adapters Products
Tapered pipe threads are not to be used for mechanically joining components in a system where load would be placed perpendicular to the plumbing line.
Tapered Pipe Fittings are still widely used in industry, though, because of their relative low-cost, widespread familiarization among users, lack of alternative port designs offered by many component manufacturers, and/or when exposed to more caustic media which requires the corrosion resistance of metal-only seals.
Straight threaded adapters (also known as o-ring boss fittings and BSPP fittings) seat an o-ring on the shoulder of the male half of the connector against metal a sealing surface on the female port.
