 Understanding Shad Means Understanding Bass
Threadfin shad live primarily on microscopic plant and animal life, phytoplankton and zooplankton, which is why they are often found around rock riprap, bridge and dock pilings, and areas with gentle current where algae grows or is washed into the system.
Threadfin shad grow rapidly - life expectancy is two to three years - and the migrations from shallow cover to open water tend to occur from late spring throughout the summer and well into autumn.
Threadfin shad cannot tolerate cold temperatures and actually begin dying (winter kill) when the water reaches approximately 45 degrees.

The upper and lower jaws of threadfin meet in a pointed snout, but gizzard shad have a blunt snout with the lower jaw set behind the upper jaw.
While threadfin do not grow too big for predators to eat like gizzard shad, they can still make up most of the fish biomass in a body of water due to their filter feeding ability and high reproductive rates.
While gizzard and threadfin shad are certainly important as forage fish in many of Alabama's rivers and reservoirs, the potential problems shad can cause should be carefully considered before the are stocked in any body of water.
