  Threadfin
Threadfin (SS-410) was laid down on 18 March 1944 at the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard; launched on 26 June 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
On 30 January, Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass unmolested in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.
Threadfin rescued nine crewmen from the schooner and learned that her victim had been bound for Dairen, laden with coal.

USS Threadfin (SS-410), a Balao-class submarine">Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the threadfin, any of a family of fishes related to the mullets and distinguished by filamentous rays on the lower part of the pectoral fin.
Threadfin was laid down on 18 March 1944 at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire.
Finally, her underwater performance was boosted by the installation of two "greater capacity" batteries — they actually produced the same power as the old style batteries but in a smaller, lighter physical plant — and a snorkel for extended submerged cruising.

 USS THREADFIN (SS-410)
On 30 January 1945, USS Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass, unmolested, in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.
USS Threadfin was the lead ship in a Sixth Fleet Naval Review to honor the visit and inspection of the naval units by the President of the United States...Richard Nixon...who watched the demonstrations from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
Ex-USS Threadfin (SS-410) was stricken from the United States Naval Register on 1 August 1973 and Turkey returned the title of the boat to the United States...terminating the loan of the submarine to that nation.

On 31 March, that group was dissolved, and Threadfin received orders to join Hackleback (SS-295) and Silversides (SS-236) near Bungo Suido, the primary entrance to the Japanese Inland Sea which separates Honshu from Kyushu and Shikoku.
Finally, her underwater performance was boosted by the installation of two "greater capacity" batteries-they actually produced the same power as the old style batteries but in a smaller, lighter physical plant-and a snorkel for extended submerged cruising.
At the completion of her Guppy IA conversion, Threadfin was recommissioned at Portsmouth on 7 August 1963, Lt. Comdr.

Eternal Patrol - USS Trigger (SS-237)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
On 25 March she was to move west and patrol between 29!N and 31!N west of the Nansei Shoto chain, remaining clear of restricted areas and outside the 100 fathom curve.
Since she knew the position of the enemy restricted area containing mines, and had been told to keep clear of it, it is extremely doubtful that Trigger's loss was due to a mine.
Threadfin obtained two torpedo hits on a DE and she was depth charged by accompanying escort vessels.

At Pearl Harbor, she underwent refit followed by a brief four-day training period before departing on her third and final war patrol.

The next day, Japanese planes and ships joined in a two-hour attack on a submarine that was heard by Silversides, Sea Dog (SS-401), Hackleback (SS-295), and Threadfin (SS-410) in adjacent areas.
Threadfin was the only one of these submarines that had been attacked that day, and she reported that she heard many depth charges and several heavy explosions east of her position after the attack on her ceased.
Post-war Japanese records showed that, on 28 March 1945, a Japanese aircraft detected a submarine and bombed it.

 DANFS: USS Threadfin (SS-410)
Three days later, she concluded a somewhat discouraging, but still successful, first war patrol at Midway Island.
Over the next eight months, Threadfin received extensive modifications in an effort to make her more effective in underwater operations -- more truly a submarine than simply a submersible.
Finally, her underwater performance was boosted by the installation of two "greater capacity" batteries -- they actually produced the same power as the old style batteries but in a smaller, lighter physical plant -- and a snorkel for extended submerged cruising.

 Threadfin Reunion
Threadfiners mingled with other submariners of all eras in remembering those on “eternal patrol,” while still enjoying the renewed memories of days gone by.
Sporting their blue, white and denim T-fin shirts with their blue Threadfin buttons, the Threadfin presence at Kings Bay was well-noted in both the Howard Johnsons (USSVI), and the Quality Inn (Threadfin) hospitality rooms as well as in the area’s restaurants.
The “Blast From the Past” sessions went very well as former shipmates shared their tales of “Life on Threadfin.” Memorable highlights were Don DeCoster, a NAVSEA Field Officer at Newport News (VA) Shipbuilding and former T-finer telling us about the “design, construction and tests” of the Virginia-class submarine.

Some boats with a Portsmouth Sail had an SV-radar and needed extra room to house the screen, thus had a bulge at the sail top.
Later modifications put the SS or SS2 radars on these and other boats which had a smaller screen and had an indicator with interlocks which allowed the mast to be housed only with the screen in certain angular positions.
Also, some GUPPY II and GUPPY III boats had their sails extended higher above the waterline, the "Northern Sail," to raise the bridge, allowing it to be manned in more severe weather.
