'Three Coins in the Fountain' of Life: The I Ching
The characteristic Chinese coins, minted with a square hole in the middle, may look exotic enough to us, but there is a deeper meaning in the fact that they are commonplace in China.
And when we see three coins tossed repeatedly into the air, heads and tails counted on their descent, and we are told that the results have some significance beyond pure chance, it is more than we can abide.
And I will wager that, if you give that toss of the coins a chance, pardon my pun, in the spirit of curiosity and investigation, you will not be unamazed at the uncanny ability of the I ching to penetrate to the heart of the matter on which you have consulted it.

I don’t believe this was intentional, or else only one coin would have been thrown in the fountain since Jean Peters’s character chose not to throw one in (thus there were only two coins thrown in the fountain).
Three Coins in the Fountain - now considered a misnomer because the Jean Peters character does NOT throw a coin in - shes returning to America.

 Three Coins in the Fountain
"Three Coins in the Fountain" is one of those big and brassy, but oh-so-velvety smooth and glossy glazed confections from 20th Century Fox's stable of Cinemascope lovemaking, circa 1954.
After the girls take their hard earned dimes and nickels and toss them into the Trevi Fountain, they are not-so-miraculously visited by the likes of three studly gentlemen: John Frederick Shadwell (Clifton Webb), Georgio Bianchi (Rosanno Brazzi) and Prince Dino de Cessi (Louis Jourdan).
As is the case with tripe and treacle befitting any mind-decaying fancy like this, "Three Coins" is greatly benefited by its anamorphic Cinemascope projection, capturing Rome in its vivid splendor and making at least half of the film a dreamy travelogue.

Like a Mills and Boon novel inhabited by a set of Stepford triplets, ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ is really a rather poor — and even vaguely creepy — piece of work.
The success of this type of film relies almost entirely on charm and this is a commodity in which ‘Three Coins’ is sadly deficient: the three leads lack chemistry, the dialogue lacks any wit and the romance lacksÂ… romance.
