3 Feet High and Rising - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sampling artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Hall and Oates, Steely Dan's "Peg" and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap).
The contestants (the three members of De La Soul plus producer Prince Paul) are asked four questions by the host (Al Watts), and their attempts at answering are scattered about the album.
Rolling Stone magazine gave the album three stars and concluded that it was "(o)ne of the most original rap records ever to come down the pike, the inventive, playful 3 Feet High and Rising stands staid rap conventions on their def ear".

"Three Feet High And Rising" was so far ahead of it's time conceptually and musically, that many today are just discovering the beating heart beneath all the layers of inside jokes and youthful absurdity.
But what makes "Three Feet And Rising" endure to this day, isn't so much the diverse variety of samples, but more the way in which the samples were juxtaposed and weaved together in a disjointed haphazard manner.
And ultimately, "Three Feet High And Rising" remains a classic to this day because of more than its dazzling array of samples, more than their positive message, more than their catchy hooks and delivery - but because the album is from the soul.

The group's 1996 album Stakes Is High stands as the dividing line between the freewheeling innovations of "golden era" hip-hop and the flossy hip-pop concoctions now playing on a radio near you.
De La Soul's members insist their music is equally palatable to the general public and to veteran hip-hop fans, some of whom have charged that the group has lost the eccentric touches of Three Feet High and Rising.
But 15 years after Three Feet, the members of De La Soul are family men who've watched hip-hop become a billion-dollar business.

Ten years later the flood had slowed to 2 to 5 feet a year, "but it shows no sign of stopping," says Bob Leibfried, a DNR hydrologist who has studied the Canisteo for two years.
It revealed three possible receiving waters for the Canisteo Pit drainage: Trout Lake, Holman Lake, and Prairie River.
If the Canisteo water were directed to Trout Lake, the lake level would increase approximately half a foot and could rise higher during extreme storms, flooding residences in low areas.

De La Soul: Three Feet High & Rising ---Ink Blot Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
The elaborate and quirky song names, strident positivity and laid-back style of Three Feet High along with the Native Tongue collective of the Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love and A Tribe Called Quest, offered a counter-movement to the dominance of gangster rap in the early 90s.
Though the album received a surprising popular response, the group somewhat resented the bohemian label spawned from Three Feet and moved toward heavier content and an even quirkier, more off-beat take on topics like the music industry, hangers-on and lawyers for its second LP, De La Soul is Dead, in 1991.
A lengthy hiatus between records preceded 1996's Stakes Is High, which countered the lack of mainstream appeal with a strengthened grip on the group's dedicated fan base.

Sure, some of 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING may already sound dated, like some strange relic from an imaginary 1989 summer of love, but it's still packed with the energy and humor that made it so irresistible in the first place.
3 FEET HIGH...is the epitome of Afro-centric peace-oriented rap; yet De La Soul moved on very quickly from this manifestation of the style, although they've yet to lose their ingenuity or intelligence.
De La Soul's albums have always changed the sound of rap biz and 3 feet high and rising is no acception.

After checking in at a local motel, during which time fat and irritating maybugs invaded the car and then the room when we opened the doors, I decided to check out a local bar in the hope of chatting with some friendly hometown folk.
The Sports Bar had three people in it: a nuggety guy with a long braid and tatts, a fat and foul-mouthed middle-aged woman, and a guy I took to be her husband.
The ancient bar woman slammed down my beer like I had been an imposition on her valuable time and went back to her conversation with three equally ancient cronies, one of whom had taken his teeth out and put them on the bar while he sipped his soup.

CANOE -- JAM! - De La Soul Toronto bound
At that time, there was room on the charts for a number of different lyrical and production approaches besides the soon-to-be-dominant gangsta rap, including Public Enemy's rapid-fire production and political messages and De La Soul's sunny masterpiece Three Feet High And Rising, with its goofy skits, funky beats and Steely Dan and Johnny Cash samples.
Now, the non-violent "conscious" hip-hop movement that Three Feet High And Rising helped establish is a relatively small niche of the giant rap market, but De La Soul are still very much in the game.
After floundering a bit in an effort to respond to demands that they make their music harder, the trio of Posdnuos, Trugoy and Maceo decided to concentrate on their strengths, and last year they put out their best album in years.

“Three Feet High And Rising” set the tone for a different way of making hip-hop music: no macho crotch-grabbing, gold chain wearing gangsta bees and wannabees bollocks, but musicians setting intelligent and entertaining music on the front stage.
Without conforming to expectations on both sides of the musical divides this music was real rap that attracted a non hip-hop audience without selling out.

The minor league ballpark keeps its charm while main street fades because the minor league park is part of a larger machine, a feeder toward the big league hype machine.
Even the ads in the stadium have a bit of charm left, like the local plumbing company bought them to impress their old high school friends and maybe get some business, rather then as part of their international marketing scheme.
The best example of this effect in action is probably Kanye West, a talented producer, but one whose often obvious and high profile samples get made into records only because he is backed by Jay-Z and Rocafeller Records.
