No one seems to know how this mountain was named, but the series of exposed rock pinnacles cresting its summit at 7,841 feet may have been the source.
TFJ has one main rock climbing route up the south ridge with two different approaches to the ridge above timberline.
Rotten rock abounds on TFJ, and other routes up the mountain are not recommended.

Murieta saw the posse and yelled to the rest of his men to "run for it!", both "Three fingered Jack" and Murieta jumped on their horses and road furiously out of camp.
The posse opened up upon the fleeing outlaws with their weapons, Murieta and his horse were shot to pieces and Murieta fell to the ground.
The head was put on display and sent to local fairs and celebrations, where for a dollar you could see the notorious bandit king (along with the hand from "Three Fingered Jack").

On Sunday, October 26, Karl Iwen wanted to climb Three-Fingered Jack and asked two climbers who he met at the trailhead if he could tag along with them since he was unfamiliar with the mountain.
This group of three was one of three climbing parties on the mountain that day.
These three climbers proceeded through The Crawl (considered by some to be the crux due to exposure) unroped and moved off the standard route into some dicey terrain where they began belaying.

It was rumored Joaquin Murrieta and his buddy, Three Fingered Jack made Indian Gulch their regular hangout, and that Joaquin worked there briefly as a packer.
Waltz Road, entering from the west was once a public road, and the Three Buttes adjacent to it were rumored to have been called Murrieta Buttes.

TFJ has a nice PCT trailhead and provides a straightforward approach to the peak.
After leaving the trail it is a steep scree slog to get up on the ridge, which has some loose and exposed class 2 and 3.
The top provided awesome views of the Three Sisters, and also a good view of the Park Meadow fire which was still raging some 5 miles away.

 Hiking in Central Oregon
It was the Fall of 2002 and we still had a week of vacation to "use or lose".
There was no way we were going to "lose" it so when the opportunity to go on a hiking trip out near the Three Sisters Wilderness area came along, we decided to grab it.
The trail took us up to the base of Three Fingered Jack where we ate our lunch in the shadow of the peak.

For the 3rd time in three visits, I was soaked from head to toe wading through that brush.

Hello All, I have three things to report: On Tuesday, I was driving into Waldport from the south and near the breakwall where the Highway parallels the water i saw a bunch of white fluff on the road and falling from the sky.
With only three hours for lab, the trips couldn't really get too far from PSU and most students don't have binoculars so I chose a place where we could get up close to the birds.
We then were surprised by three more (two of them adults, and not a good look at the third who veered off) flying into that same field.
