Another TLA And All Its Hype - 3/1/2005 - Wireless Week - CA506406
TLA stands for a "Three-Letter Acronym." There is a plethora of TLAs along with acronyms of four, five or more letters.
TLAs and the others are usually thought up by the folks working on a new technology, concept or device, and their use tends to spread like wildfire, especially at industry conferences.
Skepticism is a healthy reaction to promises that are made, demos that are performed in controlled environments and technologies that might not truly be ready for prime time.

 BBC - h2g2 - Acronyms
Acronyms are a handy way of abbreviating the alphabet soup which is science, technology and politics; instead of having to pronounce either the names of the letters (as in GWR - Great Western Railway) or the full name of the organisation or object, we have a single short word.
But note that the most common definition of TLA is still 'Three Letter Acronym' - and as such it is mis-applied in the vast majority of cases (PCI, VGA, CGI - more, indeed, than you can poke a stick at).
An early recursive acronym, dating back to the early 1960s, is Mung: 'Mung Until No Good', the process of rewriting a large and complex piece of code until it becomes both unrecognisable and dysfunctional.

Robert McLaws: FunWithCoding.NET - Longhorn Edition : Avalon
Even thought Microsoft stepped away from the alphabet soup for Windows Vista, we're back to dealing with three-letter acronyms (TLAs) for Indigo and Avalon.
(Side note: isn't it funny that the acronym for Three Letter Acronym is itself a three letter acronym?)

Indigo = Windows Communication Foundation

Personally, I think Avalon's name is dumb.

When I try to explain Avalon to a non-techie end user, and I use the word "presentation", they say "Oh, you mean like Powerpoint?" Microsoft's mantra for names from this point forward should be "eschew obfuscation".

TLA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The TLA (three-letter abbreviation or acronym) is the most popular type of abbreviation in computing and telecom terminology and Internet slang, and is also common in political jargon.
Some of these, such as "DOS", are strict acronyms, while others, like "TLA" itself, are initialisms; this distinction is not universally accepted (see the latter article for a discussion), but leads to the use of abbreviation as opposed to acronym in expanding the term.
Likewise, a four-letter abbreviation (e.g., VERA) is sometimes known as a LFLA (Longer Four Letter Acronym), an ETLA (Extended TLA) or a TLA/E (TLA/Extended).

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - TLA
However, the expansion "three letter acronym" is the older and more frequently cited one.
Using only upper-case letters, there are 26³ = 17576 possible three-letter abbreviations, and probably most of them are already used in some context.
There is some disagreement about whether abbreviations like TLA actually constitute acronyms (see acronym and initialism), and this has led to the increasing use of the word abbreviation as opposed to acronym in expanding the term.
