Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The piece's unorthodox, largely symbol-based score directs the musicians to play at various vague points in their range or to concentrate on certain textural effects.
Another unusual aspect of Threnody is Penderecki's expressive use of total serialism.
As a whole, Threnody constitutes one of the most extensive elaborations on the tone cluster.

In their native US, Threnody Ensemble share a label with John Cage and Terry Riley, which highlights their neo/contemporary-classical ambitions; here they are the debut release on a new label launched by Barry Hogan, the promoter of the innovative festival All Tomorrow's Parties.
Threnody Ensemble sound like a kind of unplugged version of GY!BE and make a sound that verges on classical, but never quite tips over the edge to the hateful world of toffee-nosed snobbery and for that we all must be grateful.
Threnody Ensemble may not be as intense as either of those bands but it gets its point across through combining the aesthetic and the conceptual.

Though originally conceived as an abstract sonic canvas, Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (1960) for fifty-two string players not only dramatically demonstrated the capacity of conventional string instruments to transcend their traditional role but, with a new title appended, to paint a picture of atomic devastation.
In this ingenious rethinking of a familiar sonic resource, the composer encouraged his audience to hear his composition as an evocation of the psychological nightmare of the first nuclear holocaust.
The unusual notation of the score, which forgoes traditional noteheads in favor of thin fl bars that expand and contract on a typical five-line staff like an aneurysm, is a direct mirror and measure of the work's conception.

That style is epitomized in the Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (1960).
While it is still a far cry from the Threnody, the greater adventurousness suggests that Penderecki is trying to find a way of reopening the concerns of his younger self in the more traditional context in which he now composes.

Penderecki's early works show the influence of Anton Webern and Pierre Boulez (he has also been influenced by Igor Stravinsky).
The piece which brought him international fame was Threnody For the Victims of Hiroshima (originally called 8' 37", perhaps in a nod to John Cage), written for 52 string instruments.
The experimental textures such as were seen in the Threnody are balanced by the baroque form of the work and the more traditional harmonies seen in places.

For them, the experience took on greater stress after their guest was pressed to add his daring but difficult Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima to the program.
An inordinate amount of rehearsal time was deflected toward preparing the 10-minute work whose technical requirements are like nothing this orchestra has ever played before.
(Threnody was given its dedication after it was composed.) Commissioned to honor the bicentennial of the French revolution, Symphony no. 4 is simply another in a series of works that represent Penderecki's decision to take his part in extending the symphonic tradition, chiefly as it was left by Shostakovich.

Arguably Krzysztof Penderecki’s most famous work, the Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is scored for 52 strings.
The strings are the most iconic of orchestral instruments, perhaps, but the Threnody is an extended study in non-traditional sounds.
To name but two examples: there are chords, which are not at all chords in any traditional harmonic sense, but instead a matter of sounding every note within a certain range; and the composer asks the double-bass players to draw their bows, not across the strings, but against the peg on which their instrument stands.

During the last hour, we heard two pieces from the end of Penderecki's "experimental sacred" period -- a transitional work with some neoromantic elements that would soon be elaborated to much greater degree, and a longer work representing his pivot point away from experimentalism and toward neoromanticism.

MTO 6.1: Mirka, Texture in Penderecki's Sonoristic Style
ABSTRACT: In his so-called "sonoristic" period of the early 1960s--represented by pieces such as Threnody, Fluorescences, Polymorphia, and others--Penderecki employed a compositional system whose axiomatic concept was not a single sound, but the sound matter in its totality.
Distinct states of this sound matter were governed by two relatively independent systems: (1) a basic system which ruled the texture of sound masses and (2) a timbre system governing their sound color.
Its particularity lies in the fact that the axiom here is not a concept of a single sound event, but of sound matter taken in its totality--en masse, so to say.

Penderecki also brought this fearlessly inventive approach to writing for strings to his large-ensemble works of the period, including 1959's critically acclaimed Anaklasis (featuring 42 strings) and the harrowing Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (1959-61), a ten-minute piece for 52 strings that remains one of the most popular of Penderecki's works throughout the world.
It was also with the Threnody that the composer debuted a new form of optical notation for his work.
Following the subsequent successes of Anaklasis and Threnody, Penderecki went on to compose such major works as the multiple award-winning St.
