Cal's Plant of the Week   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
We found this plant at one of the local retailers that was going out of business and because of it strange appearance, I had to have it.
During the winter blooming period, plants are watered a little bit more than in the summer, but care should be taken not to water them too much or root rot may occur.
Cal's Plant of the Week is provided as a service by the University of Oklahoma Department of Botany & Microbiology and specifically Cal Lemke, who is OU's botany greenhouse grower and an avid gardener at home as well.

 Thrift Phlox
When plants are spaced as separate clumps, rather than in a solid swath, they need other spring blooming or evergreen neighbors to avoid having brilliant spots look lonely in an otherwise spring-bare bed.
Each plant spreads into a 1 to 3-foot wide mat, retaining a 2 to 3 inch height, which rises to 6 inches tall when in bloom.
Shear back stems of plants by one-third to halfway, every two to three years, after spring bloom to promote vigorous new growths and to keep the ratio of roots to top growth in good proportion.

Plant Life in the Scottish Highlands - Maritime Plants that Inhabit the Mountain Pastures
Such plants as the Thrift (Statice maritime), the Seaside Plantain (Plantago maritime), the Scurvy-grass (Colchlearia officinalis), the Seam Campion (Silene maritime) and the Roseroot (Sedum Rhodiola) are quite common plants in the mountain pastures and yet they are all sea-shore plants.
But, if we consider for a moment the conditions affecting plant life in maritime situations, we shall soon see that there are many points of similarity with conditions on the mountain sides.
The Thrift, like many other inhabitants of the mountain slopes, forms dense, cushion-like tufts of leaves which are often of a considerable circumferences.

 [No title]
Merkt's status as the most senior employee, the elected ``plant representative'', and member of the employee steering committee of employees (which did not discuss topics such as job security and work assignments) are irrelevant to the issue of coercive inquiry into union activities.
For Bugnitz, the plant manager, to suggest, and indeed unequivocally state that Merkt's statutorily protected union activities would cause the layoff of his coemployees necessarily is a statement of retaliation, not against Merkt, but against the employees because of Merkt's union activities.
Therefore, the omission of the retirement thrift plan should indicate that the omission in the master agreement was specific and intentional; and that it is no longer a subject appropriate for mandatory bargaining because it has already been bargained out.
