The 1982 album was also a success from which the pop superstar never really recovered--subsequent albums seemed to have no other goal than to beat the records set by Thriller.
Both albums established a Jackson style that aimed for the dance floor with songs built on a state-of-the-art bed of percussion and keyboards.
With Thriller the album, Jackson created a different kind of monster--a hit album of such magnitude that it would have an irrevocable impact not just on the singer's art, but on his altogether kooky life.

Thriller is an album by pop singer Michael Jackson, released by Epic Records on December 1, 1982.
The album's first single, "The Girl is Mine" (a poppy duet with former Beatle Paul McCartney) was a commercially successful, though critically maligned, song that was solely written by Jackson.
Thriller is tied for the record for the most top ten singles from an album, with seven.

Live, the group was still the hottest thing on ten legs, and the first single from the album, the anthemic "The Power and the Glory," certainly suggested that the magic dispensed by their last set, Life on the Line, was still firmly in place.
But the album as a whole didn't simply disappoint, it all but disappeared and, for 20 years thereafter, when old-time fans discussed the Rods, it was the first two albums that lay on the alter.
Reissued for the first time since those dark days, Thriller hasn't simply improved with age; It actually rivals its predecessors, a fast-paced, dramatically dynamic and, above all, deeply melodic album that reiterates both the complexity and the contrary simplicity that was the Rods at their best.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Michael Jackson: Thriller
The growling stomp-lite of "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," both marked by Q's fuzzy synthesized basslines, weaned millions of unsuspecting children onto low-end funk even as Prince was experimenting with bass-deficient funk.
But Thriller does more than just announce Michael's arrival as a pop superstar (he was already there)—it's about his arrival in the same way his sister's Control was about the arrival of Janet, period.
Thriller is still big, and Jackson's getting small only serves to highlight its pop (musical and cultural) achievements.

"Thriller" was less of a conventional video and more of a full-fledged short subject or mini-film; a horror film spoof featuring choreographed zombies performing with Jackson.

The All-TIME 100 Albums: Thriller by Michael Jackson
Twenty-nine of the 100 greatest albums of all time come in the 1970s, and Pink Floyd isn't there.
Michael Jackson was 24 when he released what was to become the best-selling album of all-time (until it was eclipsed in the late 90s by The Eagles Greatest Hits, 1971-1975) and there's no whining about celebrity, no messiah complex, just nine immensely catchy tracks, seven of which went Top 10.
The Quincy Jones-produced hooks remain awe-inspiring, and while Jackson had few ambitions beyond global domination, it's worth noting that "The Girl is Mine" made interracial love pop and Eddie Van Halen's "Beat It" guitar solo bridged arena rock and soul four years before Run DMC met Aerosmith.

I have to agree that this wasn't a perfect album because if it was then every track would have been a #1 hit at some point and it would have sold over 100 million copies. This CD is a must have for all MJ fans, DJ's, and music collecters young or old.
Thriller is an album that everyone in the 1980's seemingly had a copy of, and it's been a respectable catalog seller (usually selling 200,000-300,000 copies a year, not bad for a 1982 release and with so many collections on the market), why?
This album will continue to sell and live on long after MJ is dead and buried, this album is a great time capsule of an era that a lot of people truly miss.

 20) Thriller : Rolling Stone
Still in his early twenties when Thriller was released, the RandB child star of the 1970s had ripened into a Technicolor soulman, a singer, dancer and songwriter with incomparable crossover instincts.
He and producer Quincy Jones established the something-for-everyone template of Thriller on 1979's Off the Wall, on which Jackson captures the rare mania of his life -- the applause and paranoia; the need for love and the fear of commitment -- in a crisp fusion of pop hooks and dance beats.
On Thriller, the pair heighten the sheen (the jaunty gloss of "The Girl Is Mine," with a guest vocal by Paul McCartney), pump up the theater (the horror-movie spectacular "Thriller") and deepen the funk.
