Throwing Muses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Throwing Muses is an alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Newport, Rhode Island, that toured and recorded extensively until 1997, when its members began concentrating more on other projects.
Originally fronted by two distinctive lead singers, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, who both wrote the group's songs, Throwing Muses are known for performing music with shifting tempos, creative chord progressions, unorthodox song structures, and surreal lyrics.
Yet her enthusiasm for Throwing Muses remained high; the band recorded new versions of several early songs for inclusion in the double-CD In a Doghouse compilation comprised of the self-titled debut album and the Doghouse Cassette.

Throwing Muses: self-titled - PopMatters Music Review
Throwing Muses, the eponymously titled new album, is almost a return to roots, although it might be more accurately described as capturing the inherent live element that the band always possessed.
Although the core power trio of the latter-day Throwing Muses is intact, keeping the songs as sparse as ever, Donelly lent her voice to the album without adding guitars.
Although the Muses plan to tour to support the disc, it will be a brief one, with some scattered European dates announced and only two US dates confirmed at the time of this writing.

Throwing Muses is a post-punk alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Newport, Rhode Island, that toured and recorded extensively until 1997, when its members began concentrating more on other projects.
Originally fronted by lead singers Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, who both wrote the group's songs, Throwing Muses is known for performing music with shifting tempos, creative chord progressions, unorthodox song structures, and poetic, surreal lyrics.
The Muses were set apart from their peers by Hersh's stark and startling lyrics, which veer between surrealism and often shockingly candid insights into her personal life.

Throwing Muses is the first Throwing Muses album since 1996's Limbo, and the first to feature founder member Tanya Donelly--later of the Breeders and Belly--since the 1991 classic The Real Ramona (Donelly has not formally rejoined the group, but is a guest backing vocalist on about half the tracks).
The closest relatives Throwing Muses has among the group's peerless back catalogue are the edgy, untitled 1986 debut album, with its howled vocals and peculiar time signatures, and the fabulous 1992 catharsis Red Heaven.
The rest of Throwing Muses (this new album, not the previous one of the same name!) is new ground for TM, but still retains their distinctive style.

My favourite Throwing Muses is now University; it used to be hunkpapa--either of these would be a good introduction, especially for those not used to noisy rock.
This is the album that first decoded Throwing Muses for me--once I heard this their earlier work suddenly sounded like more than just noise to me. And this album is brilliant--I've been listening to it frequently since it first came out and it has never yet lost its freshness and life.

The Muses are spear-headed by Kristin Hersh, who writes most of their stuff these days.
I've always been a big fan of her vocals, through the early Muses albums to her solo efforts, and I thought it translated well live, even given the poor acoustics of the 9:30 club.

Throwing Muses' angular, anguished, mercurial sound had much to do with Hersh's mental illness (she suffered from a form of bipolarity that caused her to hallucinate), especially on early albums like House Tornado.
In Spring 2000, the Muses reunited for a special event called the Gut Pageant, which featured a set from Hersh, Narcizo, Bernard Georges, and Robert Rust, as well as a solo performance by Hersh, short films by Narcizo, and a picnic lunch hosted by the group.
During three weekends in 2002, the trio got together to record another album; released the same day in 2003 as Hersh's The Grotto, Throwing Muses (self-titled, just like their debut) was the group's rawest, loudest album.

College radio airplay and critical acclaim prompted Sire to sign Throwing Muses and release The Fat Skier: six songs on one side and a nearly nine-minute seventh ("Soul Soldier") on the flip.
As the final Throwing Muses album before Donelly — having tested the world beyond in the Breeders —; moved out to form Belly, The Real Ramona betrays no special creative tension or gathering storm clouds, although the recording process was reportedly a high-wire balancing act.

Consequently, the Muses early influence on the burgeoning alternative-rock scene was felt in ripples rather than waves.
There's a freshness lacking on the more recent muses stuff, although at times this can get wearing, the vocal is sibilant and cuttting, and the all-out thrash, which is interim in the deconstruction of most of the songs, is less than calming.
