 TRS2: Thrud The Barbarian #1
For many years, Thrud ran as a one page strip in White Dwarf magazine (during the period known by its readers as 'before White Dwarf was crap').
Thrud, standing about 8 feet tall, with a huge exaggerated physique, an enormous axe, and a very, very small head bashed and battled his way through a series of comic misadventures.
While Thrud marched through the strips striking Frazetta-style poses, hacking and slashing monsters into bits, the strip's pay off would often be quite understated - a sight-gag made all the more funny by a follow-up good line for instance.

It seems clear that just as Thrud has a "special" game mechanic to determine who he plays for he may also require "special" agreement between the players involved in the game.
As part of the pre-game sequence a d6 was rolled, a 1 indicated that Thrud and his horde of barbarian fans had showed up, and would play for a randomly selected team.
But this was a way to use Thrud's low cost in a non-beardy manner, because he had the potential to affect everybody, and couldn't be chosen as a normal star player.

THRUD THE BARBARIAN, his Conan-esque stories of the world's least intelligent and smallest headed barbarian appeared monthly in WHITE DWARF magazine, were regularly voted the best feature of the magazine and remain, even today, a textbook example of how to tell a story well within a single page.
THRUD is not GROO despite initial appearances to the contrary.
Thrud's world is an absurd, filthy place inhabited with people who are either violent, desperate, stupid or all of the above.

BULLETPROOF COMICS - THRUD THE BARBARIAN 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Thrud - a vision of muscles crowned by a tiny, pea-sized head - was created by Carl Critchlow, while at art school in the early '80s.
While the character of Slaine, to a great extend, was an intelligent, comic twist on the genre, Thrud is a dim-witted Obelix-style clod, a simple caricature Schwarzenegger-style Conan, lacking even the latter's depth of character.
It remains to be seen whether the Thrud comic ignites the same level of interest as his original White Dwarf adventures.

Frist of all I want to tell the background why I have a question about Thrud the barbarian.
In retrospect, perhaps he should have had to make his confused roll every two or three turns (sorry, I disagree with EVERY turn) to keep in line with the fluff, but being an ogre his Bonehead roll saved the day for his opponent.
Thrud was introduced after the DB rules were published too - so it never had to take account of him.

STRIKE TO STUN : Thrud the Barbarian # 2
Carl Critchlow's second offering of Thrud continues in the same vein as the debut issue, with a pulp-fantasy pastiche that allows our favourite knuckle-headed barbarian to engage in mindless slaughter whilst remaining blissfully unaware of the unfolding storyline.
While it was all too easy to like Thrud because of its resurrection of a favourite of the gaming community, there always was going to be a danger that Thrud might not pan out too well over a full comic.
Saying this, there are those who enjoy Thrud without any clever allusions, and to this majority I can only say that you will love #2.
