ThrustSSC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ThrustSSC (SuperSonic Car) is a British designed and built jet propelled car developed by Richard Noble and Ron Ayers, which holds the world land speed record.
On October 15, 1997 in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada USA, driven by Andy Green, ThrustSSC became the first land vehicle to smash the sound barrier, reaching a speed of 1227 km/h (763 mph).
ThrustSSC and Thrust2 are displayed at the Coventry Transport Museum in Coventry, England.

ThrustSSC is the most powerful car ever designed to attack the land-speed record, and as the name SSC (Super Sonic Car) indicates, it is also one of the first produced with genuine potential to break the Sound Barrier.
ThrustSSC is the result of two-and-a-half years of research into the shape of a supersonic vehicle, followed by another two years and some 100,000 man-hours of construction.
ThrustSSC's cockpit is positioned in the middle of the car, between the two massive Spey engines and close to the car's centre of mass.

Breaking the Sound Barrier on Land - ThrustSSC
But for now, and for the foreseeable future, there is no doubt whatsoever as to who has the fastest car in the world, and the fastest car in history.
Before we were able to fully appreciate the degrees of dedication, preparation and professionalism that the ThrustSSC team had put into their campaign, many of us had been betting on Craig Breedlove to be the first to go supersonic on land, with his Spirit of America jet car.
Between setting up their equipment, preparing the race course, mechanical challenges involved in taking care of the race car and continuing to refine it, press conferences, documenting everything, and waiting for the Spirit of America to make runs, the team spent over two months on the desert.

 763mph: Thrust makes it official
The historic achievement was the final goal for the British team which first set a new land-speed record on Sept 25, then became the first to break through the sound barrier on Oct 13, and now has made two supersonic runs within an hour.
Over the measured mile, where ThrustSSC reaches its peak speeds, the clean tracks created by the car's aluminium wheels are replaced by deep marks that look like agricultural tracks.
To make the momentous achievement a shade easier, the team decided to run as early as possible in the day, when cool temperatures give the engines more thrust and the speed of sound, which is dependent on temperature, is lower.

On the racetrack the characteristic marks left by ThrustSSC are obliterated as the passage of the shockwave has pulverised the desert surface - indeed it is only by looking along the tracks rather than directly down at them that the wheelmarks can even be found.
Although shockwaves were always expected from ThrustSSC - and the high-speed photographs of the rocket-sled models exhibited several - quite such visual effects never were.
We have never seen similar photographs of shockwaves from the Budweiser Rocket, nor have we ever heard reports of a similar effect on the surface of the desert at the Edwards Airforce Base where the car ran.

Mr Hill offered to wire the funds to the ThrustSSC team at Gerlach, a seven-bar town without a church or shop, on the edge of the Black Rock desert in Nevada, but was told that there was nowhere to send it.
Mr Hill would not divulge how much he has donated to ThrustSSC's bid for the sound barrier, but Richard Noble said it was enough to keep the team afloat for several more days.

Was this the moment Thrust went boom?
SPECTACULAR 150ft shock waves radiated from both sides of ThrustSSC as the rocket-powered British car came close to and possibly broke the sound barrier during a test run yesterday.
Richard Noble, ThrustSSC's project director, said: "It's entirely possible that a mild boom has been heard as the air will pass over some parts of the car at supersonic speeds before the car reaches the sound barrier." The team plans to take the car through the sound barrier as soon as weather allows.
The test run was not officially timed by the United States Automobile Club, but according to team members, the car's on-board data readings suggested that it could have broken through the sound barrier for a short part of the run.
