In 1991, he beat Marvin Hagler's half brother, Robbie Sims, by a knockout in round seven, and then embarked on another winning streak, which would reach ten wins in a row.
He won the WBC's world Super Middleweight title with a knockout in round four of defending world champion Mauro Galvano, after having beaten his future conqueror and world champion "Sugar Boy" Malinga by a decision in ten.
In 1996 he lost to Malinga by a 12 round decision to lose the WBC world title, and then he was given a chance at the WBO's world title, but he lost to Steve Collins by a knockout in round four, after breaking his ankle during their fight in Manchester.

The 12,000 fans at London Arena greeted the decision in almost silent disbelief after the judges scored it 117-113, 115-114 and 117-112 in the South African's favor.
After this unexpected win, Malinga is 42-10-0 and 26-year-old Reid is 25-1-1.

You also had to consider another Super Middleweight during that time, the IBF champion Graciano Rocchigiani, who incidentally suddenly became unseated exactly dated January 27th of his last '89 defense against Thulane Malinga.
Rocchigiani's belt officially went up for grabs January 27, 1990, New Orleans, with Lindell Holmes defeating Frank Tate over twelve rounds filling in the void and vacancy.
